Tulpan is a 2008 Kazakh drama film. It was directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy and distributed by Zeitgeist Films. Tulpan was Kazakhstan's 2009 Academy Awards official submission to Foreign Language Film category. It won the award for Best Film at the 2nd Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Synopsis

Une yourte au fin fond des steppes du Kazakhstan. Un jeune homme aux grandes oreilles en tenue de marin évoque l'hippocampe, ce tout petit animal comme un "chameau" des mers : Asa est de retour de Sakhaline où il vient de faire son service militaire dans la marine. La yourte est celle de la belle Tulpan et de ses parents. Asa, venu avec son beau-frère Ondas et son ami Boni, va-t-il les convaincre qu'il peut faire un bon mari pour Tulpan, et ainsi fonder une famille, avec une ferme pour élever de nombreux moutons ?

The film opens just as construction has been completed on a railway connecting a mountainous regions of eastern Bosnia and western Serbia in 1992. Luka, a Serbian engineer, has moved to Bosnia from Belgrade with his mentally unstable wife, Jadranka, and his football-playing son, Miloš, to run a railway station and act as caretaker. Luka is at work preparing the opening of the railway while Miloš attempts to become a professional footballer with the Partizan team. Utterly engrossed in his work and blinded by natural optimism, Luka remains deaf to the increasingly persistent rumblings of war, which has broken out in Croatia and threatens to spread.
