Synopsis
Brighton, 1959. Tony Aaron est un ancien policier reconverti en détective privé dans les affaires de divorce. Il s'est en particulier spécialisé dans la falsification des preuves d'adultère. Il est engagé pour une nouvelle affaire en apparence anodine. Il mêle sa femme à son enquête sur le peintre Carlo Stasio, mais le couple est brutalement assassiné dans une chambre d'hôtel. Frank, ancien partenaire de Tony, est mis sur le coup. Ses deux principaux suspects sont: Angeline, la maîtresse du peintre qui aurait pu vouloir le tuer pour hériter de ses peintures et de sa maison; et Tony lui-même, devenu suspect numéro un du meurtre de sa propre femme.Actors

In 1991, Detective Matthew Scudder (Liam Neeson) is in a car with his partner. He then enters a bar and gets two shots and a cup of coffee. Two masked men then come in and kill the bartender, prompting Matt to take his gun and fire at them. He runs into the street and shoots one man down. The second man and a third drive away. Matt shoots the driver while the final man flees. Matt shoots him in the thigh and follows him down some steps and kills him.

The film begins with a small IRA team, including Martin Fallon (Mickey Rourke) and Liam Docherty (Liam Neeson), watching as two British Army Land Rovers approach the roadside bomb they have set for them. At the last minute, a school bus overtakes the army vehicles and detonates the bomb as it passes, killing the children. After most of the team escape the scene pursued by the soldiers, Fallon travels to London in a bid to escape the past. In London, he is approached by a contact who asks him to take on one last job on behalf of local gangster Jack Meehan (Alan Bates) and his brother Billy Meehan (Christopher Fulford). They offer Fallon money, a passport and passage to the US if he kills a rival gangster. Initially reluctant, he nonetheless takes on the job. However, as he is carrying out the hit in a graveyard, he is seen and confronted by the local Catholic priest, Father Michael Da Costa (Bob Hoskins). The confrontation is watched from a distance by Billy Meehan, who tells his brother there is a witness to the killing.

Around Christmas, a United States Supreme Court Justice commits suicide, for which no explanation or context is given. We only see the Justice making a tape recording and then shooting himself. Lara Brennan (Elizabeth Banks) is convicted of murdering her boss and is sentenced to life in prison.
