Synopsis
Abbas Mahadjir était professeur de français en République centrafricaine. Il a fui avec sa famille l'une des guerres civiles qui ont frappé son pays. Il est hanté par le souvenir de sa femme, tuée au cours de leur fuite. Il vit désormais en France avec ses deux jeunes enfants, Asma et Yacine, qui sont scolarisés. Il travaille sur les marchés où il a rencontré Carole, une fleuriste d'origine polonaise avec qui il a noué une relation. Quand sa demande de statut de réfugié au nom du droit d'asile est rejetée par l'OFPRA, il engage un recours. Lorsque celui-ci est à son tour rejeté, il se voit signifier une obligation de quitter le territoire français. Au bout des 30 jours réglementaires, n'ayant pas déposé de recours auprès du président du tribunal administratif, désormais sans travail, sans logement, « sans papier », il trouve refuge chez Carole avec ses enfants. Quand la police convoque Carole au commissariat et l'informe des peines encourues pour l'aide au séjour des étrangers en situation irrégulière, il préfère prendre la fuite avec ses enfants sans laisser d'adresse. Carole tente en vain de retrouver leur trace dans la jungle de Calais, démantelée quelques heures plus tôt.Actors

The film begins with the contorted body of the woman, covered in frost. From this image, an unseen and unheard interviewer (the voice of Varda herself) puts the camera on the last men to see her and the ones who found her. The action then flashes back to the woman, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) walking along the roadside, hiding from the police and trying to get a ride. Along her journey she meets and takes up with other vagabonds such as herself as well as a Tunisian vineyard worker, a family of goat farmers, a professor researching trees, and a maid who envies what she perceives to be a beautiful and passionate lifestyle. Mona explains to one of her temporary companions that at one time she had an office job in Paris and did very well for herself, but she became unsettled with the way she was living – choosing instead to wander the country free from any responsibility, picking up what she could to survive as she goes. Throughout the film, Mona's condition seems to become progressively worse until she finally falls where we first saw her, frozen and entrenched in her misery in a ditch.

Based upon the famous 1910 novel of the same name by Danish writer Martin Andersen Nexø, the film is set in the late 1850s and early 1860s. A boat filled with emigrants from Sweden arrives at the Danish island of Bornholm. Among them are Lasse Karlsson and his son Pelle who have moved to Denmark from Skåne County, in southern Sweden, to find work after the death of Pelle's mother. They find employment at a large farm, but find themselves treated as the lowest form of life. It is only as Pelle starts to speak Danish that he begins to gain in confidence, but is still discriminated against as a foreigner. But neither boy nor father is willing to give up their dream of finding a better life than that which they left in Sweden.

Okwe is an illegal Nigerian immigrant to the United Kingdom who drives a cab in London during the day and works at the front desk of a hotel at night. The hotel is staffed with many immigrants, both legal and illegal. Okwe keeps himself awake by chewing khat, an herbal stimulant. A doctor in his home country, he was forced to flee after being falsely accused of murdering his wife. In London, he is pressed into giving medical treatment to other poor immigrants, including fellow cab drivers with venereal diseases. Okwe's friend Guo Yi, an employee at a hospital mortuary, provides him with antibiotics under the table.

Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) is pregnant with LAPD sergeant Martin Riggs' baby; they are not married, but both are thinking about it. Because firing them is not an option, the Chief uses a special privilege and they get temporarily promoted to captains, given that there aren't any lieutenant spots available.
