A reclusive famous painter, Frenhofer (Piccoli), lives quietly with his wife and former model (Birkin) in a rambling château in rural Languedoc-Roussillon. Anna, Cécile, Joyce et Claude sont étudiantes au même cours d'art dramatique : le cours de Constance Dumas, qui n'a comme élèves que des filles. Les quatre habitent un pavillon de la banlieue parisienne, où elles forment une petite communauté. Un jour, Cécile quitte non le cours, mais la maison où elle est remplacée par une autre élève : Lucia. Pour Cécile apparemment heureuse de partir vivre avec un homme, la situation va pourtant se dégrader. Dans le même temps, les habitantes du pavillon sont approchées l'une après l'autre par un homme mystérieux et joueur, qui change de prénom à chaque apparition. Les quatre amies comprennent que cet homme enquête sur Cécile, ou sur son compagnon. Mais sans parvenir à deviner ses intentions ni son objectif. Pendant ce temps, le cours continue : les élèves au fil des séances, sont confrontées aux difficultés de l'apprentissage. Leur professeur est à la fois une figure de référence et un personnage un peu mystérieux. L'homme va réussir à s'introduire dans la maison.

The film starts in Afghanistan where an APC is on patrol while the passengers, are nervous as to whether they will still be alive ("Sky Takes the Soul"), before an ambush happens. Some time later Davy and Ally, two recently discharged British Army servicemen, return to their homes and families in Edinburgh after a tour in Afghanistan ("I'm on my Way"). Ally returns to his girlfriend Liz, a nurse who is Davy's sister. On Davy and Ally's first night home Liz introduces Davy to her English friend and colleague Yvonne at a pub, where Liz and Yvonne take part in some drunken story telling, a Scottish tradition ("Over and Done With"). Following from their blind date Davy and Yvonne strike up a romantic relationship ("Misty Blue") as Ally and Liz consider their future as a potential married couple ("Make my Heart Fly").

Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a junior artist in the 1970s Hindi film industry, in love with film star Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). One evening, Om views the premiere of Shanti's film Dream Girl, posing as Manoj Kumar. Later that night, Om becomes drunk and describes his vision of himself as a famous, wealthy film star winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actor to his friend Pappu (Shreyas Talpade) and some local children. At the shooting of a later film, Om rescues Shanti from a fire scene where of the fire has escaped control, and they become friends. One day, after following Shanti, he overhears her and producer Mukesh Mehra's (Arjun Rampal) conversation, that Mukesh and Shanti have married in secret and Shanti is pregnant and expects a traditional wedding. Mukesh pretends to be happy with the news, and invites Shanti at the set of their soon-to-be-made film Om Shanti Om. Mukesh promises to cancel the film, reveal their marriage to the public, and have a grand wedding on the set; but instead traps Shanti on the set and sets it on fire to prevent a financial loss and to protect his career. Shanti tearfully begs Mukesh to release her but he leaves anyway.
