Synopsis
Le film développe les sujets classiques de l'amour et de la vie. C'est l'histoire d'une épouse trompée, Penelope, qui, après 18 ans de mariage, ne supporte plus l'égoïsme de son mari, Andrea, qui est allé jusqu'à essayer de se faire pardonner ses infidélités en offrant un bac de glace vanille-chocolat. Enseignante au conservatoire de musique et mère de trois enfants, elle quitte le foyer conjugal après avoir découvert l'ultime trahison de son mari et retourne dans la villa de son enfance, au bord de la mer. Là, elle se prend du temps pour se consacrer à la réflexion et aux souvenirs. C'est alors qu'intervient une rencontre avec Carlos, le peintre, et que commence une brève mais intense histoire d'amour.Actors

The Cantones are a bourgeois family who own a pasta factory in Lecce in conservative Southern Italy. One of the two sons, Tommaso (Riccardo Scamarcio), returns from his studies in Rome and hopes to make the most of a family reunion to reveal his homosexuality. Tommaso discusses his plans with his elder brother, Antonio (Alessandro Preziosi), and also tells him about his desire to break away from the family business to become a writer in Rome. During a dinner with the Brunetti family, with whom the Cantones are in business, just as Tommaso is about to share his news, Antonio interrupts and reveals to everyone that he himself is homosexual. Mr Cantone (Ennio Fantastichini), the brothers' father, takes the news badly and is admitted to hospital.

Set in the year 1950, Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean poet, is exiled to a small island in Italy for political reasons. His wife accompanies him. On the island, local Mario Ruoppolo is dissatisfied with being a fisherman like his father. Mario looks for other work and is hired as a temporary postman with Neruda as his only customer. He uses his bicycle to hand deliver Neruda's mail (the island has no cars). Though poorly educated, the postman eventually befriends Neruda and becomes further influenced by Neruda's political views and poetry.
