It is an adaptation of the 1934 novel Via Mala by John Knittel, which had previously been made into a film in 1945. After a tyrannical father in a small Swiss village is killed, almost everyone he knows comes under suspicion of having murdered him.
Synopsis
Le vieux Jonas Lauretz exploite avec sa famille une scierie isolée dans Viamala, en Suisse. Jonas est un tyran violent et intimide sa femme, son fils Niklas et ses filles Sylvia et Hanna. Ivre une fois de plus, il déclenche une bagarre et se retrouve en prison. Sa famille espère qu'il va changer.Actors

Le grand propriétaire terrien Dag et son fils Tore se disputent depuis des années avec la famille noble voisine Gall, à qui appartient le domaine de Borgland. Lorsque Tore, au cours d'une fête au village de Björndal, drague Elisabeth, la fille des Gall, il est tué par le petit ami jaloux, le lieutenant Margas, après l'avoir défié dans un duel à l'épée. Tore chute dans une cascade, on ne sait pas vraiment s'il est mort puisqu'on ne retrouve pas son corps. Adelheid Barre, la fille d'un major à la retraite, surprend une conversation entre Elisabeth von Gall et Margas et apprend l'assassinat. Elle se rend à Borgland pour voir son père, parce qu'elle ne veut pas vivre aux côtés d'Elisabeth, mais celui-ci est parti.

One night, unemployed widower Joseph (Peter Mullan) drunkenly kicks his dog Bluey to death. He buries the dog and goes to the post office, where he mocks some Asian workers then throws a brick through the window when they tell him to leave. At the pub, Joseph attacks two young men playing pool one of whom threatened and mocked him. He then hides in a second-hand shop, where employee Hannah (Olivia Colman) offers to pray for him. That night, Joseph goes to his home and is attacked by the men from the post office. The next morning, Joseph wakes up and goes to the shop, where Hannah looks after him. He begins to berate and insult her, before leaving.

The movie starts in Germany 1939, in the barracks of an artillery battalion. The enlisted men of the battery are harassed by their Wachmeister Schulz and a platoon leader, Feldwebel Platzek, whenever possible. Especially Gunner Vierbein, who has a passion for music and wanted to become a piano player, is a preferred target. This intensifies when Vierbein is ordered by Schulz to carpet beating in his rooms and Schulz´s wife, Lore, starts flirting with him. Even the squad leader Unteroffizier Lindenberg, who is known to be fair and correct, starts under pressure from Schulz to pick on him. He breaks down under the constant hard drill and harassment; when he steals ammunition on a rifle range, to commit suicide, one of his comrades, Gefreiter Asch, who helps him constantly to get along with the military life, prevents this and decides that the harassment by the NCOs can´t go on.

The story centers around Frances Benedetto (Mary Stuart Masterson), a victim of domestic violence. The movie follows Frances's relationship to her increasingly abusive NYCPD officer husband (played by Anthony LaPaglia), who has the police force on his side, and her eventual escape to Florida with her son (played by Will Rothaar). Eventually her husband finds them and attacks her. Her son's sports coach comes to the house when she does not pick her son up from practice on time and finds her beaten and bruised in the hallway. Meanwhile, her husband kidnaps their son. Five years later, she has married the coach and has a daughter, although she has never found her son. Her son meets up with his aunt by chance on the street, and Frances (her name now changed to Beth) receives a phone call from him.

Miriam Besson (Léa Drucker) et Antoine Besson (Denis Ménochet) ont deux enfants : une fille, Joséphine (Mathilde Auneveux) sur le point d'être majeure et un fils de onze ans, Julien (Thomas Gioria). Le couple est en plein divorce. La mère veut protéger son fils et l’éloigner de son père qu’elle accuse de commettre des actes de violence sur ses enfants. Elle demande donc, lors du jugement, la garde exclusive de l’enfant, d’autant que le fils ne veut plus revoir son père. Malgré les arguments de Miriam et son avocate ainsi qu'une lettre de Julien demandant à ne plus voir son père, la juge chargée du dossier accorde une garde partagée et contraint l’enfant à passer un week-end sur deux avec son père.

Le front de l'est. Wedelmann, le sympathique chef de la batterie d'artillerie, est remplacé par le capitaine Witterer, un carriériste. Vierbein, qui est encore un jeune homme doux et rêveur, est un excellent soldat, il peut prétendre à la Croix de fer. Le lieutenant-colonel von Plönnies lui propose une mission spéciale en Allemagne. Il devra aller chercher les nouvelles armes que l'officier a commandés. Le lieutenant Schulz, à qui on a refusé la permission de quitter le front, est ravi de voir Vierbein. Quand il apprend les faveurs accordés à Vierbein, il devient jaloux et va lui mettre des bâtons dans les roues. Grâce à l'aide du lieutenant-colonel qui réprimande Schulz, Vierbien peut partir accomplir sa mission. Il rend visite à la triste Lore Schulz, pour qui il joue du piano, car il préfère jouer que tirer. De retour au front, Vierbein devient le souffre-douleur de Witterer. Lors d'une attaque de chars, il s'enfuit dans un trou, par-dessus lequel passe un char russe, il se retrouve enterré vivant. Asch et Kowalski viennent voir sa fiancée Ingrid, la sœur d'Asch, pour lui annoncer sa mort et lui donner une lettre pacifiste que lit Asch. En fond, on entend Der gute Kamerad.

Ed MacAffrey, a loving husband and father, is terrorized by the violent behavior of his wife, Laura. He tolerates this not only because he loves her and is concerned over the welfare of his daughter, but also because men are traditionally regarded as weaklings if they allow themselves to be battered by their wives. After one of Laura's destructive tantrums brings the attention of the police, Ed is suspected of being the aggressor. Finally, Laura goes too far and Ed tries to defend himself - whereupon Laura crashes through the front window of her home and is rendered comatose.
