Synopsis
After the death of his father, the young Viking prince Vladimir of Novgorod, is forced into exile across the frozen sea to Sweden, after his brother Yaropolk has murdered his other brother Oleg during a diplomatic mission, and conquered the Viking settlement of the Kievan Rus federation.Actors

The film opens during the production of War and Peace at Mosfilm Studios in 1964. An elderly Russian noblewoman is set to appear as a film extra until her past comes to light. Although the film's political commissar demands her dismissal since she is a "wife of an enemy of the revolution", director Sergei Bondarchuk is adamant that he needs faces like hers for the production. As the commissar realises the difficulty of identifying her using the file he has, he immediately recognises the elderly woman behind him as the woman he is searching for, while the elderly woman is looking at her own 1910s photo.

Talented young pilot Alexey Guchshin does not accept authority and acts in accordance with a personal code of honor. Because of the copious amounts of large buildings in the center of Moscow, the Moscow subway tunnel, built in 1935, is starting to fail as it cannot withstand the resulting weight. One tunnel night crawler, Sergeitch (Sergey Sosnowski), sees a small leak in the roof of the tunnel (in the place where the tunnel runs under the Moscow River) and informs the assistant station (Michael Fateev), but he says that it is only groundwater and mocks the old man for worrying about it. Meanwhile, Irina Garin (Svetlana Hodchenkova) is torn between her lover - businessman Vlad Konstantinov (Anatoly Bely) - and her husband - a district hospital surgeon Andrei (Sergei Puskepalis) - with their daughter Ksenya (Anfisa Wistinghausen). Konstantinov believes that she is no match for Andrei, and tries to persuade her to divorce him. Arriving from Zagranpoezdki, she spends the night with Konstantinov and doesn't have time to come home in the morning. Andrei has to take his daughter Ksenya to school but by chance, they cannot go by car and walk to the metro station "Garden". Simultaneously, Konstantinov arrives, hurrying to work, but forced to give up the car because of traffic jams. Meanwhile Sergeitch, drinking with casual acquaintance Galina (Elena Panova) next to the "Garden", recalls that the water leaking into the tunnel smelled of slime, which means that it can not be groundwater. They are detained by the police for drinking alcohol in a public place, but manage to escape, and Galina flees into the subway. Sergeitch phones his employers to inform all the dispatchers but police turn a deaf ear to his request.

In 1184 France, Balian (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith, is haunted by his wife's recent suicide. In the opening scene in Ireland, a young boy loses his parents in a Viking raid, but is spared in spite of the command of Thord, the Vikings' leader, to kill him. His sister is kidnapped by the Vikings. Twenty years later, the boy has become a man and travels to Iceland to seek revenge against the perpetrators and find his sister. His name is never revealed, and he is only known as "Gestur" by the characters in the film since he is a stranger to them. "Gestur" simply means "guest" but is also not an uncommon given name.

The King of Northumbria is killed during a Viking raid led by the fearsome Ragnar (Ernest Borgnine). Because the king had died childless, his cousin Aella (Frank Thring) takes the throne. The king's widow, however, is pregnant with what she knows is Ragnar's child because he had raped her during that fateful raid, and to protect the infant from her cousin-in-law's ambitions, she sends him off to Italy.
