Synopsis
Le « coup de foudre » réciproque d'un veuf et d'une veuve au départ d'une colonie de vacances dans laquelle ils ont placé leurs enfants. Ces derniers, confrontés à la perspective d'un hypothétique mariage, manifestent leur opposition tout en estimant davantage d'autres prétendants.Actors

The year is 1928. Samuel Fulton (Charles Coburn) is an old and lonely New York millionaire who has decided to leave his fortune to the family of the late Millicent Blaisdell. Millicent is the only woman he has ever been in love with and they briefly dated, until she dumped him because she did not return his love. Samuel explains to his lawyer Edward Norton (Frank Ferguson) that losing the love of his life was what inspired him to build up a career as a wealthy businessman, eventually becoming the richest man in the world. Fearing the family will spend the money the wrong way, he decides to visit them in a small Vermont town, faking a newspaper advertisement to board a room under the alias John Smith.

Apprenant l'annulation de son concert, le prince la fait rappeler et demande à la connaître. Charmé à son tour, le prince promet de l'aider dans ses recherches sur son père. Le seul indice dont dispose Christine est une chanson que chantait sa mère à l'homme qu'elle aimait. Le prince reconnaît la chanson et se souvient de son aventure amoureuse avec une belle chanteuse, 25 ans auparavant : Christine est sa fille, elle chantera le soir au concert de cour, et épousera le lieutenant Walter.

In 1947, widow Lora Meredith (Lana Turner) dreams of becoming a famous Broadway actress. Losing track of her young daughter Susie at the beach (portrayed as a child by Terry Burnham), she asks a stranger named Steve Archer (John Gavin) to help her find the girl. Susie is found and looked after by Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), a black single mother who also has a daughter, Sarah Jane (portrayed as a child by Karin Dicker), who is about Susie's age. Sarah Jane inherited her father's fair skin and can pass for white. She does this with fierce zeal and fervor, taking advantage of her European heritage and features. In return for Annie's kindness, Lora temporarily takes in Annie and her daughter. Annie persuades Lora to let her stay and look after the household, so that the widow can pursue an acting career.
