Le film est la suite de Wolf Warrior, sorti en 2015. Il raconte l'histoire d'un ancien membre des forces spéciales chinoises nommé Leng Feng qui devient mercenaire et accepte des missions dans le monde entier. Dans la suite, il part sauver ses compatriotes et ses amis africains dans des zones d'Afrique en conflit et occupées par des insurgés et des mercenaires.
Le film est un énorme succès en Chine où il dépasse, en 31 jours, la barre des 800 millions $ de recettes au box-office chinois 2017. Le film rapporte finalement 854 M$ en Chine et un total de 870 M$ dans le monde pour un budget de 30 M$. C'est le second plus gros box office d'un film sur un territoire national derrière Le Reveil de la Force aux États-Unis. Le film a bénéficié de l'absence de concurrence hollywoodienne puisque les films étrangers sont interdits de sortir en Chine durant les vacances d'été en Chine (de fin juin à août). C'est le plus gros succès de tout le temps au box-office de Chine.
Une suite, Wolf Warrior 3 , est annoncée dans la scène post-générique.

Chan Kwok-chung (Simon Yam), a Hong Kong police inspector, has dedicated his career to putting Wong Po (Sammo Hung), a notorious triad boss, behind bars. After the Japanese surrender following World War II, the People's Liberation Army must retake areas overrun by bandits who have raided the Japanese arsenals. Shao Jianbo, known by his codename Captain 203 after his unit, commands a group of 30 men. They are out of food and low on ammunition. One of their problems is resolved when they defeat a group of bandits dressed as the PLA who are guarding stores of ammunition. Reinforcements arrive via train in the form of Yang Zirong and Bai Ru, a combat medic, who are warmly greeted when they bring food. Captain 203 leads his men to the village raided by the bandits. Along the way, they meet a young boy who lost his family to bandit attacks. Though he initially distrusts the PLA soldiers, he warms to them after they rescue him from a bandit spy in the village.
