En Californie, à l'époque de la Ruée vers l'or : Cowpoke, un cow-boy de passage en ville, sauve la vie de Tennessee, un joueur professionnel, en abattant un tueur à la solde d'un de ses rivaux. Les deux hommes, très dissemblables, nouent cependant une amitié réciproque. Tennessee fréquente le saloon d'une belle femme qu'on nomme "la Duchesse" et qui est aussi son amante. Là, une aventurière cupide, autrefois liée à Tennessee, entreprend de séduire Cowpoke. Ce dernier lui promet bientôt un mariage. Mais, les choses s'enveniment... car, Tennessee, afin de préserver son ami, éloigne la jeune femme. Cowpoke se fâche, mais finit par en comprendre les raisons. Les deux hommes se réconcilient. Plus tard, Cowpoke sacrifie sa propre vie pour sauver Tennessee, à nouveau menacé.

Former bison hunter and entrepreneur Wyatt Earp (Joel McCrea) arrives in the lawless cattle town of Wichita, Kansas. His skills as a gunfighter make him a perfect candidate for marshal but he refuses the job until he feels morally obligated to bring law and order to this wild town. As with the later film Warlock in 1959, the lawman comes in conflict with his sponsors. His least popular move is to take away the guns of everyone in town, no matter how important. Only when town banker Sam McCoy (Walter Coy) is hit with a personal tragedy does Earp's no-guns edict begin to make sense.
