After a brief introduction to some of the main characters of the story, the beginning sees a group of Rishis, led by Vishvamitra, performing a Yajna in a forest not far from Ayodhya, the Capital of the Kingdom of Kosala. This Yajna, like several before it, is interrupted and destroyed by a group of flying demons led by Ravana's relation Maricha. After seeing yet another Yajna destroyed, a despondent Vishvamitra appeals to Lord Vishnu for salvation. Vishnu appears in a spiritual blaze of light, informing him of his saviour- Prince Rama of Ayodhya, first-born of King Dasharatha. Vishvamitra travels to Ayodhya to meet the King and requests him to offer Rama's services to help destroy the demons in the forests. Although the Solar Dynasty King is reluctant at first to send the young lad, he is reassured by the resident Rishi that no harm will come to him and even encouraged to send his third son Lakshmana as an accompaniment.

Frantically, Chihiro returns to her parents, only to discover that they have literally transformed into pigs. She attempts to escape, but the way by which they came has since become submerged. Frightened and alone, she observes as the world she ventured into reveals itself as a luxurious retreat for spirits to revitalize themselves.

Le cartoon commence avec Daffy Duck déguisé en mousquetaire dans le lieu approprié. Lorsqu'il avance vers la gauche, le décor n'est pas fini. Daffy sort discrètement de l'écran puis revient et brise le quatrième mur en demandant qui est responsable du cartoon et demande de redessiner ce décor, le résultat est une ferme, obligeant Daffy à se déguiser en fermier. Il chante jusqu'à revoir le décor en blanc. Il redemande au quatrième mur « Est-ce qu'il sera trop de vous demander de vous décider une bonne fois pour toutes ? », puis des décors respectivement enneigés, hawaïens, une colorisation par erreur sur Daffy (Daffy ayant demander de colorier une ville sans la préciser), un décor où Daffy est en marin, un gros plan malcompris par le dessinateur et une mine que Daffy frappe accidentellement le poussent à demander qui est le dessinateur, qui s'avère être Bugs Bunny.

The film begins at Sannomiya Station on 21 September 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. A boy, Seita (清太), is shown dying of starvation. Later that night, having removed Seita's body, a janitor digs through his possessions and finds a candy tin which he throws away into a nearby field. The spirit of Seita's younger sister, Setsuko (節子), springs from the tin and is joined by Seita's spirit as well as a cloud of fireflies. Seita's spirit then begins to narrate their story accompanied by an extended flashback of the final months of World War II.

In the village of Flåklypa, Lom, Gudbrandsdalen (En. Pinchcliffe), the inventor Reodor Felgen (En. Theodore Rimspoke) lives with his animal friends Ludvig (En. Reodor works as a bicycle repairman, though he spends most of his time inventing weird Rube Goldberg-like contraptions. One day, the trio discover that one of Reodor's former assistants, Rudolf Blodstrupmoen (En. Rudolph Gore-Slimey), has stolen his design for a race car engine and has become a world champion Formula One driver. Solan secures funding from Arab oil sheik Ben Redic Fy Fazan (En. Abdul Ben Bonanza), who happens to be vacationing in Flåklypa, and to enter the race, the trio builds a gigantic racing car: Il Tempo Gigante—a fabulous construction with two extremely big engines (weighing 2.8 tons alone and making the seismometer in Bergen show 7.8 Richter when started the first time), a body made out of copper, a spinning radar (that turns out to be useful when Blodstrupmoen starts engaging in smoke warfare during the race) and its own blood bank. Reodor ends up winning despite Blodstrupmoen's attempts at sabotage.

Dans le présent, son arrière-arrière-petit-fils, Miguel, âgé de 12 ans, vit avec sa famille, et Coco, son arrière-grand-mère, dans le petit village mexicain de Santa Cecilia. Il rêve de devenir un musicien comme Ernesto de la Cruz, vedette de la chanson et du cinéma, de la même génération qu'Imelda (ce dernier est mort lors d'une représentation, quand une énorme cloche lui est tombée sur la tête). Lors des préparatifs de la Fête des Morts, Miguel casse accidentellement le cadre de la photographie d'Imelda, au centre de l'autel, et découvre que son mari (dont la tête a été arrachée de la photographie) tenait la célèbre guitare blanche d'Ernesto. Plus tard dans la soirée, quand Miguel fait part à sa famille de son intention de participer au concours de talents du Jour des Morts, sa grand-mère Elena détruit sa guitare. Furieux, il quitte la maison et se dirige vers le cimetière de la ville.

Au milieu des années 1950, un ouvrier de la Compagnie de Construction et de Démolition Acme Inc. employé dans la démolition d'un bâtiment trouve une boîte à l'intérieur d'une pierre angulaire. Cette boîte contient un testament daté de 1892 et une grenouille. Celle-ci se met subitement à chanter et à danser devant les yeux ébahis de l'ouvrier. L'homme essaie d'exploiter les talents de l'animal mais il échoue à convaincre un imprésario que sa grenouille chante et danse vraiment, l'animal faisant bien son show devant l'ouvrier mais redevenant inerte à chaque fois face à l’imprésario. Après avoir déboursé toutes ses économies pour produire la grenouille dans un théâtre, il se retrouve dans la misère après l'échec de la représentation, le batracien restant délibérément muet face aux spectateurs. Interné en hôpital psychiatrique pour avoir tenté de convaincre un policier que ce n'est pas lui mais sa grenouille qui chante, il finit par se débarrasser de l'animal en le mettant dans une nouvelle pierre d'un immeuble en construction. En 2056, un ouvrier découvre à nouveau la grenouille, et l'histoire se répète.
