Sammy le Goëland et Cecil le Corbeau ont embarqué sur le même bateau. Cecil, originaire de l'Iowa, veut voir une danseuse de hula-hoop ; heureusement, ils viennent d'arriver à portée d'une île tropicale où se trouve une charmante danseuse. Ils essaient à tour de rôle de l'impressionner, avec des cascades telles que l'écriture de cœurs dans le ciel (Cecil manque de se noyer) et des plongées fantaisistes (Cecil manque de s'écraser, puis se bat avec un requin, une tortue et une étoile de mer).
Après un travelling latéral où défile un panneau faisant de la réclame pour les war bonds, nous découvrons dans un désert du Far West Elmer Fudd en prospecteur d'or, surchargé d'un énorme sac rempli à craquer de ses affaires. Tout en marchant, il chante la chanson traditionnelle Oh! Susanna . Il est bientôt rejoint par Bugs coiffé d'un crâne de squelette de taureau, et chante avec lui. Elmer remarque seulement le lapin quand Bugs termine la chanson par une finale personnelle. Aussitôt, Bugs disparaît dans un terrier qu'il creuse sous lui-même. Pendant qu'Elmer regarde dans l'ouverture, Bugs réapparaît par un autre trou de terrier, façon ascenseur. C'est l'occasion pour lui de lancer sa tirade « Quoi d'neuf, docteur ? » au mineur toujours penché vers le trou. Elmer prend peur quand Bugs lui fait « bouh », et s'enfuit à toute vitesse. Mais il revient aussi vite, l'air méchant. C'est au tour de Bugs de s'enfuir en hurlant.
Foreign correspondent Rickey Mayberry (Dennis Morgan) hurriedly flies back from Spain to the U.S. to keep his wife from divorcing him, but he's followed on the flight by love interest Irene Malcolm (Rita Hayworth). Mayberry's wife Sue (Merle Oberon) has indeed divorced him, although she still loves him. The comedy of errors is compounded by Irene and also by Rickey's boss (James Gleason), who both conspire to keep the couple apart.
Nick and Nora Charles are looking forward to a relaxing day at a racetrack, but when a jockey accused of throwing a race is found shot to death, Police Lieutenant Abrams requests Nick's help. The trail leads to a gambling syndicate that operates out of a wrestling arena, a murdered reporter, and a pretty secretary whose boyfriend has been framed. Along the way, Nick and Nora must contend with a wild wrestling match, a dizzying day at a merry-go-round (accompanied by Nick, Jr.), and a table-clearing restaurant brawl.
Theater owner and womanizer Martin Cortland (Robert Benchley) enlists the aid of his manager Robert Curtis (Fred Astaire) to woo dancer Sheila Winthrop (Rita Hayworth) but is caught by his long-suffering wife Julia (Frieda Inescort), who hints that he's gone too far this time and his increasingly unbelievable excuses might soon be judged by "twelve strange men." Robert and Sheila are attracted to one another but Robert is caught in Martin's continual attempts to deceive his wife (and keep his marriage, and thus his fortune, intact) and Sheila doubts Robert's sincerity.
In a mansion in Xanadu, a vast palatial estate in Florida, the elderly Charles Foster Kane is on his deathbed. Holding a snow globe, he utters a word, "Rosebud", and dies; the globe slips from his hand and smashes on the floor. A newsreel obituary tells the life story of Kane, an enormously wealthy newspaper publisher. Kane's death becomes sensational news around the world, and the newsreel's producer tasks reporter Jerry Thompson with discovering the meaning of "rosebud".
John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) is a popular young Hollywood director of profitable but shallow comedies (e.g. Ants in Your Plants of 1939). Sullivan is dissatisfied despite his success and tells his studio boss, Mr. Lebrand (Robert Warwick) that he wants his next project to be a serious exploration of the plight of the downtrodden. He asks to make his next film an adaptation of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, a socially-conscious novel. Lebrand wants him to direct another lucrative comedy instead, but the idealistic Sullivan refuses to give in. He wants to "know trouble" first-hand, and plans to travel as a tramp so he can return and make a film that truly depicts the sorrows of humanity. His butler (Robert Greig) and valet (Eric Blore) openly question the wisdom of his plan.
In the kingdom of animals, the fox Renard is used to tricking and fooling everyone. Consequently, the King (a lion), receives more and more complaints. Finally, he orders Renard to be arrested and brought before the throne.
A widow is loved by a doctor whose brother, a priest, unwittingly falls in love with the young woman, who is persuaded to enter the convent. Put on the right path by a missionary, the priest blesses the marriage of his brother.

Aboard, he meets Elizabeth Cotton (Lana Turner); she takes an instant dislike to him. When they arrive, Candy is amused to discover she is the daughter of "Judge" Cotton (Frank Morgan), an old acquaintance of his. Elizabeth is unaware of her father's crooked past and present.
