Aiyampettai Arivudainambi Kaliyaperumal Chandran (A.A.K. Chandran for short) (Rajinikanth) is a playful young man. Upon completion of his degree, his father's friend and business partner (Poornam Viswanathan) advises him to attend an interview for a job at his friend Sri Ramachandramurthy's (Thengai Srinivasan) company. The doctor advises Chandran to act in a manner most appreciated by Sri Ramachandramurthy: namely, wearing a Nehru kurta, always telling his full name, giving importance to his moustache, showing a lack of interest in sports and drama, showing respect for his father's words (i.e., by repeating the phrase "My father always told me" often) and detesting the concept of recommendations.

Bhagyalakshmi (Sridevi) has a car accident while returning from a party and is hospitalised with severe head injuries. When she recovers, she is diagnosed with retrograde amnesia and she fails to recognise her own parents. She mentally regresses to the state of a child. While she is undergoing treatment, she is kidnapped and sold to the madam (Ganthimathi) of a brothel. Srinivas, also known as Cheenu, (Kamal Haasan) comes to Chennai to meet his old friend (Y. G. Mahendra). Together, they visit the brothel to relax. The madam sends Bhagyalakshmi, renamed Vijaya, to his room. Cheenu realises that she is mentally still a child and pities her. He learns that she is from a cultured family, and that she was kidnapped and forced into prostitution.

Anjooran (N. N. Pillai), and his four sons Balaraman (Thilakan), Swaminathan (Innocent), Premachandran (Bheeman Raghu) and Ramabhadran (Mukesh) are in severe enmity with the Anappara family. Anjooran's bitter hatred toward Anappara Achamma (Philomina) stems from events in the past, when the men of Anappara abducted Balaraman's fiancée and forced her to marry the eldest son of Achamma. The resulting series of events saw Anjooran's wife being killed, and him being sent to jail for avenging her by murdering Achamma's husband. Consequently, he develops a hatred toward all women, and their entry into his home is prohibited from then on.

An honest, religious engraver, Anargyros Loumbardopoulos (Vassilis Logothetidis), has routinely invested his money in gold coins, specifically British gold sovereigns, bought from a friend of his, a banker. Upon having stored away 100 sovereigns, a friend of the banker suggests that Anargyros mints counterfeit sovereigns, but he adamantly refuses. The banker's friend then introduces Anargyros to a lady that he knows. Anargyros' resistance is soon curbed, and he spends all his invested 100 sovereigns to buy minting equipment.

The romantic relationship of the main characters Zaur and Tahmina starts off with passionate affair and leads to many problems in a conservative society. Zaur (Fakhraddin Manafov), who is the son of a prominent and well-to-do professor (Professor Zeynally) falls in love with Tahmina (Meral Konrat), who is a divorced TV anchor admired by many of her colleagues and friends of Zaur's family which causes periodic jealousy on part of Zaur. Zaur is so much in love that he flies to Moscow after Tahmina when she's sent there on an assignment. Zaur's family condemns the relationship and tries to divert Zaur to a family arranged marriage with the daughter (Firangiz) of family friends. Pressure from the society and continuous calls from Zaur's mother (Zarnigar Aghakishiyeva) to Tahmina eventually lead to big problems in their relationship culminating in break up and Tahmina's suffering. Zaur listens to the advice of his parents, marries the family friend's daughter. Due to heavy drinking, Tahmina experiences problems with her liver and eventually dies during Zaur and Firangiz's honeymoon in Istanbul, Turkey. When he's back, his brother-in-law breaks the news to him. Devastated as he is, the final scene of the movie shows Zaur taking out his wife's list of products for grocery shopping and drives on to the market implying the life goes on.

In 1981, Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a man with below-average intelligence, watches a feather fall from the sky at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia. As he sits down on a bench, he removes a copy of The Adventures of Curious George from his suitcase and places the feather inside the pages. He introduces himself and begins telling his life story to strangers who sit next to him on the bench, recounting his childhood in Greenbow, Alabama. As a child in the 1950s, Forrest (Michael Connor Humphreys) had to wear leg braces for which other children make fun of him. He lives with his single mother (Sally Field) in a very large house outside of town, which they rent rooms to travelers. His father apparently left and he never knew him. Despite his limited mental capacity, Mrs. Gump tells her son that "stupid is as stupid does" (which he later uses as a retort when called "stupid") and also assures him that he is no different from any of the other children. Forrest is admitted to public school despite his IQ being below the cut-off, but only after his mother agrees to a one-night stand with the principal, Mr. Hancock (Sam Anderson). On his first bus ride to school, Forrest is rejected by nearly all of his peers except for Jenny Curran (Hanna R. Hall). He and Jenny become best friends, and he helps her hide from her abusive, alcoholic father.
