The film focuses on Kelly McIntyre, a disco dancer played by Dianne Hull who through no fault of her own, accidentally overdoses on drugs and collapses at a disco. She is misdiagnosed as suicidal and sent to a psychiatric ward which is on the fifth floor of Cedar Springs Hospital. There she finds herself alone with no help, not even from her boyfriend who refuses to get her out of there. She becomes the subject of interest by an unbalanced orderly played by Bo Hopkins.
Bob Mitchell (Dabney Coleman) and his wife Jean (Cloris Leachman) are driving through the hot Arizona desert on their way home to Los Angeles. A detour has taken them 100 miles out of the way down a deserted road...because Jean insisted on taking photographs of a particular area to take back to their daughter. Bob is irritated by the delay in getting home - and after throwing a few jabs at Jean, the two stop at a roadside cafe/inn called the Arroyo Motel. It's a rundown claptrap and aside from the cook Jim Cutler (Ross Martin) and one customer named Tom (Ned Beatty), the place is empty.But the two travelers are hungry and the diner will do for now. To their surprise, both Jim and Tom are hostile and downright rude to them. The situation makes Jean uncomfortable. She tries to call home using the payphone but the line is busy.

While Laura is occupied with passing the Bar Exam, Steven is disturbed by their children, athletic but unfocused David (Randall Batinkoff) and free-spirited, music loving Mary (Tammy Lauren). Steven joins the Men's Association, which is still assimilating their wives into robots. This time, they have begun to turn their out of control teens into robots as well. Once they are assimilated, the children are obedient, homework loving, accomplished droids, but with little personality.

Maggie Kemlich (Principal) is a blind woman who leads an active, independent life despite her disability. Maggie witnesses robbers murder her husband, Gordon Kemlich (Macht), using a stun gun. However, with the exception of Det. Mike Tuthill (Le Mat), police dismiss her observations due to the fact that she is blind. Police arrest the men who they believe committed the murder, but Maggie goes public with the fact that she believes they have the wrong men, prompting the murderers to come after her. She then seeks out to identify the true killers, and sets up a trap to enact revenge.
