In Seattle, not far from Forks, Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) attacks and bites Riley Biers (Xavier Samuel), in order to begin creating an army of newborns with him. Back in Forks, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) discuss the complications of becoming an immortal vampire. At 18 years old, one year older than the age Edward was when he became a vampire, Bella expresses her aversion to the idea of marrying so young, though Edward refuses to turn her into a vampire until they are married, his argument that she should have various human experiences she would otherwise miss. While Charlie Swan (Billy Burke) investigates the disappearance of Riley Biers, Edward suspects his disappearance was caused by the newborn vampires, furthering his suspicions is Riley's intrusion into Bella's room.

One evening, the Collins family discovers their maid, Mrs. Murdock, dead at the end of their steps; her neck is broken. The film begins on August 23, 1992 with a team of storm trackers tracking Hurricane Andrew over the Atlantic Ocean. While flying a plane through the hurricane, their generator malfunctions, and they lose contact with it. While trying to fix this problem, a lightning bolt hits the plane causing all systems to fail, and the plane crashes into the Atlantic Ocean. Shortly after this, a group of storm trackers realize that the category 5 hurricane is heading straight for their weather station in Miami, and are forced to evacuate.

Maria est finalement innocentée, mais le couple se sépare tout de même, car Jan a une maitresse « Bethan Ancell », qu'il a fréquenté durant cette affaire. Il préférait aller voir cette femme (qui est beaucoup plus jeune que lui), au lieu de consoler sa compagne. Il décide donc de s'installer avec Bethan.
