In 1958 Japan, university professor Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, move into an old house to be closer to the hospital where their mother Yasuko is recovering from a long-term illness. Satsuki and Mei find that the house is inhabited by tiny animated dust creatures called susuwatari – small, dark, dust-like house spirits seen when moving from light to dark places. When the girls become comfortable in their new house and laugh with their father, the soot spirits leave the house to drift away on the wind. It is implied that they are going to find another empty house – their natural habitat.
Standing at a subway station a young man, Kurono (Kazunari Ninomiya), watches as his old primary school friend, Kato (Ken'ichi Matsuyama), attempt to rescue a man who has fallen onto the tracks. Kurono ends up on the tracks with Kato after the man has been rescued, just as a train is speeding through the station. The pair are surprised to find themselves not dead, but rather relocated to a room with a few other people. When they turn around, they see a strange black sphere, about two meters in diameter.
A man driving down a hillside road realizes that his car's brakes have failed. The car crashes into a toll booth, killing the man. He leaves a dying message: "Tanabata kyo." A Mahjong tile next to his body links this case to six others in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Nagano, and other Japanese prefectures. Because of the Mahjong tiles left beside each victim, the police conclude that the same person or organization committed these murders. The police across Japan unite to solve the serial murder case.
Many years after the events of the main series, Naruto Uzumaki is the Seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village, which in this time of peace has grown to become a large city with all of the latest advancements in technology. Naruto is married to Hinata Hyuga and they have two children, Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki. Boruto is a Genin in a team under Konohamaru Sarutobi the third Hokage's grandson, with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno's daughter Sarada Uchiha, and a mysterious boy called Mitsuki. Boruto is upset that Naruto focuses more on his Hokage duties than their family. Sarada, who dreams of becoming Hokage, scolds Boruto for not taking his training seriously. Because they are childhood friends and rivals, Boruto feels the need to look good in front of Sarada.
In a flashback, Hiko Seijūrō finds young Shinta digging graves for bandits and slavers killed in battle. Shinta explains that all people are only bodies after death. Hiko decides to take Shinta as his student and names him "Kenshin". Kenshin wakes up at Master Hiko's home, and asks if his friend (Kaoru) was also washed up. He has been unconscious for three days, and master tells him that his friend is most likely dead. Kenshin asks to learn the final Hiten Mitsurugi technique, "Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki", in order to defeat Shishio Makoto and prevent his onslaught. Hiko agrees, and the two engage in a duel to start his training.
Anna Sasaki is a 12-year-old girl who lives in Sapporo with foster parents, Yoriko and her husband. One day at school she collapses from an asthma attack, so her parents send her to spend the summer with Setsu and Kiyomasa Oiwa, relatives of Yoriko, in Kushiro, a rural, seaside town where the air is clear.
Based on events in the manga by Ai Yazawa, NANA is about the adventures of two girls, who are both named Nana. Although their names are the same, their lives are completely different. One of them is an ambitious punk who is looking to break into the world of rock and roll, while the other simply wants to have a new life with her boyfriend. After moving to Tokyo while chasing their hopes and dreams, their lives greatly change after meeting each other.
The film's plot follows a traditional theme, with Zatoichi (a blind swordsman) coming to the defense of townspeople caught up in a local Yakuza gang war and being forced to pay excessive amounts of protection money. Meanwhile, Zatoichi befriends a local farmer and her gambler nephew and eventually offers his assistance to two geisha siblings (one of whom is actually a man) who are seeking revenge for the murder of their parents. The siblings are the only survivors of a robbery and massacre that was carried out on their family estate ten years ago. They soon discover the people responsible for the murders are the same Yakuza wreaking havoc on the small town.

While inspecting the corpse of Sadako Yamamura, the forensic experts note evidence that Sadako has died only a year or two ago, meaning that she was still alive in the sealed well for almost thirty years. They later reconstruct her body and send it to Takaishi Yamamura (Yoichi Numata), Sadako's uncle, who takes it on his boat and later casts it into the bottom of the ocean.
