One Halloween, the alcoholic mother of good-for-nothing Raymond suddenly dies, and he throws her body in a ditch. Repenting, he calls his sister Angèle, an actress who he has not seen for ten years, to help find the corpse. But the corpse they bring back in the ruined family home is not that of their mother. The brother and the sister start a sinister adventure involving two gangsters in dire straits, two chilling dealers, a dishonest artist agent, a terribly stupid cop, and a horde of pigs.

There are a huge number of romantic situations going on in this film at the same time. One of them involves Gaston (Lapointe), a somewhat world-weary jazz musician, and Florence (Marleau), a glamorous middle-aged woman who has been pining for him for years. Another involves to members of the musician's jazz trio. Yet another involves the play's Desdemona, Soledad (Laurier), the girlfriend of the man playing Othello, who can't keep his hands off his dresser. She is also Florence's niece.
Manon is a precocious 13-year-old girl living with her mother Michelle and intellectually challenged uncle Ti-Guy in Quebec. Manon wants to quit school and obtain the true love of her mother, who she accuses of not loving her. Michelle is pregnant with the child of Maurice, a police officer who tries to convince her to give up caring for Ti-Guy. Manon strongly dislikes Ti-Guy for his misbehavior and Maurice for being a cop, and when Michelle tells Manon of her pregnancy, Manon becomes upset.
The plot, based on the true story, follows a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer who wants to give an Indian a fair trial for the murder of a fellow officer before he winds up being executed.

L’action de ce film de fiction se passe presque entièrement à Montréal (avec de brèves scènes censées se dérouler à New York et Toronto). L'axe de l’intrigue est une discothèque, le Starlight, inspirée de la véritable discothèque le Lime Light. Ainsi, une partie du tournage s’est déroulée alentour de l’immeuble qui avait abrité le Lime Light sur la rue Stanley à Montréal (maintenant le club de danseuses nues Chez Parée et la discothèque La Boom).
