An 18-year-old on the island Djerba, Aicha, is married to Said, who works in Tunis for much of the year. Aicha breaks with tradition and decides to join Said in Tunis, weaving rugs to make money. Said asks that she give him a son, so Aicha lives under the rule of her mother-in-law.

In the Goutte d'Or neighborhood of Paris, North African immigrants share a tiny apartment amongst their French neighbors. The two communities get along uneasily, their relationship rife with misunderstandings and mutual offense. Salah (Sidi Ali Kouiret), from the southern Maghreb, is a witness to this immigrant life in Paris and to the day to day incidents which make up the life of his compatriots. They, excepting those willing to pursue a life of petty crime, live a life of tedium and depression. French racists in the area escalate tensions with a series of attacks that end in a double murder. Salah, with the help of his friends, decides to organise protests against the injustice they face.

The film is about a 25-year-old woman, Alia, who returns to her place of birth—a prince's palace in which her mother worked as kitchen hand and mistress. As she wanders through the largely abandoned palace she is confronted by childhood memories.
L'histoire se déroule en Tunisie, en janvier 2011. Deux jeunes cousines, Zaineb, 21 ans, et Aïcha, 27 ans, solidaires de la rébellion populaire enclenchée dans leur pays, luttent également pour affirmer leur indépendance et réaliser leurs aspirations. Brahim, le fiancé de Zaineb, entrepreneur en France, souhaiterait se marier avec elle et rentrer à Nice où il vit. Mais il voudrait également que sa future épouse porte le voile. La mère de Zaineb le soutient. Aïcha, profondément musulmane, est pour sa part voilée. Elle assume seule la charge de ses sœurs et de son grand-père. Hamza, militant islamiste radical, récemment évadé de prison, aime Aïcha et voudrait se marier avec elle.
