Private investigator Tom Welles (Nicolas Cage) is contacted by Daniel Longdale (Anthony Heald), attorney for wealthy widow Mrs. Christian (Myra Carter), whose husband has recently died. While clearing out her late husband's safe, she and Longdale found an 8mm film which appears to depict a real murder of a girl, but Mrs. Christian wants to know for certain.
The title of the film refers to the duration of a relationship between Wall Street arbitrageur John Gray (Mickey Rourke) and divorced SoHo art gallery employee Elizabeth McGraw (Kim Basinger). John initiates and controls the various experimental sexual practices of this volatile relationship to push Elizabeth's boundaries. In doing so, Elizabeth experiences a gradual downward spiral toward emotional breakdown.

Désormais suspect, il est serré par ses collègues policiers. Mais, très vite, un nouveau meurtre va le sortir de cette mauvaise posture. Une jeune femme est retrouvée étranglée dans une cabine téléphonique. Possédant un alibi en béton, puisqu'il était en compagnie des policiers au moment du meurtre, Lyutak décide de mener sa propre enquête pour démasquer le deuxième tueur qui s'inspire de son modus operandi pour assassiner ses victimes. Pendant ce temps, une indic de la police, Dorothée Heindrich, retrouve un couteau appartenant Lyutak mais elle est sauvagement tuée lors d'un jeu sado-masochiste.
Valentina Rosselli (Isabelle De Funès) is a Milanese photographer. One night, on her way home, she meets a middle-aged blonde seductress who calls herself "Baba Yaga" (Carroll Baker). The following day, Baba Yaga visits Valentina, showing an ostensibly sexual interest in her. After a series of events, Valentina becomes suspicious of Baba Yaga's supernatural powers and goes to her house. Baba Yaga gives her a doll dressed in leather fetish wear. It is soon revealed that Baba Yaga has started to control Valentina through the doll.

Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) returns to his logging home town of Lumberton, North Carolina from Oak Lake College after his father suffers a near-fatal stroke. While walking home from the hospital, he cuts through a vacant lot and discovers a severed ear. Jeffrey takes the ear to police detective John Williams (George Dickerson), through whom he reacquaints with the detective's daughter, Sandy (Laura Dern). She tells him details about the ear case and a suspicious woman, Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), who may be connected to the case. Increasingly curious, Jeffrey enters Dorothy's apartment by posing as an exterminator, and while Dorothy is distracted by a man dressed in a yellow suit at her door (whom Jeffrey later refers to as the Yellow Man), Jeffrey steals her spare key.
An older man, Andrew Marsh, views a homemade pornographic tape. It is later revealed the man died from complications stemming from erotic asphyxiation. The main suspect is the woman who has sex with Marsh in the film, Rebecca Carlson, who after being charged with murder is represented by lawyer Frank Dulaney. The trial begins in Portland, Oregon, and it is not long before Carlson and Dulaney enter a sadomasochistic sexual relationship behind the back of Dulaney's unsuspecting wife.
