Dans la campagne espagnole, Ferdinand, un jeune taurillon, prend soin en secret d’ une fleur qui a poussé dans l’arène pendant que Valiente, Guapo et Bones, d’autres veaux, s’entrainent et s’affrontent comme le font leurs pères respectifs. L’arrivée du matador met le troupeau en émoi et les adultes rivalisent de force pour être sélectionnés. Raf, le père de Ferdinand, est choisi et part dans l’arène, convaincu qu’il reviendra bientôt mais le lendemain soir, Ferdinand comprend que son père est mort en voyant le camion revenir à vide. Il s’échappe alors, poursuivi par le propriétaire et parvient à monter dans un train de marchandises. Il en sort lors d’un arrêt et tombe dans une rivière escarpée ou il est recueilli par Nina, la fille d’un horticulteur. Celui-ci adopte Ferdinand qui grandit pendant deux ans dans un cadre idyllique, intégré à la famille.

Paris, 1922. Jake Barnes vit à Paris depuis sa démobilisation de la guerre 14/18 et il est journaliste au « New York Herald ». Un soir, il se rend à un bal musette où il retrouve des amis dont le romancier Robert Cohn. Arrive Lady Brett Ashley qui n’est pas une inconnue pour Jake. Elle fut son infirmière à l’hôpital pendant la guerre où ils tombèrent amoureux mais à la suite de sa blessure contractée sur le champ de bataille, Jake est devenu impuissant. Depuis, ils entretiennent une amitié amoureuse. Pour tenter d’oublier cette déconvenue Brett multiplie les aventures. Elle a promis d’épouser un Écossais Mike Campbell, joyeux drille plutôt porté sur la bouteille, tout en étant très courtisée notamment par Robert Cohn qui tombe immédiatement fou d’elle. En compagnie de son ancien compagnon d’armes, Bill Gorton, Jake part à Pampelune en Espagne assister aux corridas. À peine arrivé aux fêtes de la San Fermin, Jake a la surprise de retrouver Brett entourée de tous ses prétendants. Le groupe ne se quitte plus, et participe à toutes les festivités : débarquement des taureaux, encierro à travers les rues, corrida… Brett se laisse courtiser par un jeune torero, Pedro Romero, sous le regard furieux de Robert qui finit par agresser le jeune homme. Le lendemain, Pedro triomphe aux arènes et Jake apprend que Brett s’est enfuie en compagnie du torero. Pour Robert et Mike, la fête est finie. C’est à Biarritz que Jake reçoit des nouvelles de Brett, elle lui lance un appel de détresse espérant démarrer une nouvelle vie avec lui.

Joe Bascomb (Lou Costello) chases con man Harry Lambert (Bud Abbott) to Mexico City, after Harry apparently swindled him (and some friends) in an oil stock scam back in the United States. Joe's ex-girlfriend, Mary (Virginia Grey) has hired Harry as her agent, and is going by the name 'Montana', passing herself off as a toreador. When Joe encounters Harry at a bullring arena, he also sees Mary, who is in the ring. As part of 'Amigo Americana Week', she is about to toss her hat into the crowd where the lucky recipient will be proclaimed 'goodwill ambassador'. Mary is supposed to toss the hat to Gus Adamson (Frank Fenton), another con man whom Harry has arranged to be chosen, but Mary instead throws the hat in anger at Joe. It turns out that Joe, now the 'goodwill ambassador', is also being pursued by American authorities for partaking in the oil stock scam; he uses an alias, 'Humphrey Fish', while in Mexico.

In 1930, fishermen in the small Catalan port of Esperanza make a grim discovery in their nets, the bodies of a man and a woman. Diego Montes (Nacho Martínez) is a bullfighter, forced into early retirement by a goring, and in the opening scene he finds sexual gratification viewing videos of violent death. In retirement he teaches bullfighting, and among his students is Ángel, a diffident young man who suffers from vertigo. During one episode of vertigo in the practice ring, the scene cuts from Ángel to a woman killing a man during sex with a pin she was wearing in her hair, striking at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades, as a matador kills a bull. After class, Diego asks Ángel if he is homosexual, noting that he is not experienced with women. Ángel says he is not and vows to prove himself. Later that day, Ángel attempts to rape Eva (Eva Cobo), a model who is both his neighbour and Diego's girlfriend. As she is leaving him, she trips in the mud and gashes her cheek. At the sight of her blood, Ángel faints.
