Ayant été chassé du domicile familial en raison de ses écarts sexuels, Tieta revient dans son village natal après 25 ans d'absence en compagnie de Leonora, une jeune fille qu'elle fait passer pour la fille de son mari qui vient de mourir. Tieta à la tête d'une jolie fortune se met à combler sa famille et son village de cadeaux nombreux, se débrouillant même jusqu'à y faire installer l'électricité. Sa sœur Perpetua et son père lorgnent lourdement sur la fortune de Tieta qui entre autres projets à celui de construire une maison sur une colline proche, elle se fait aider pour cela par son neveu, séminariste et fini par coucher avec. Parallèlement une idylle nait entre Leonora et le nouveau maire du village, lequel la croit vierge. Tieta voulant faire le bonheur de Leonora explique au maire que la jeune fille n'est pas vierge, qu'elle a un passé, mais que rien ne les empêche de se donner du plaisir. Ayant confiance en son amant Leonora lui révèle la vérité, elle est une employée du bordel tenue à Sao Paulo par Tieta, et les deux femmes se sont mises au vert en attendant qu'une vague affaire de drogue se calme. Le maire est furieux et dénonce Tieta dans tout le village tandis que Leonora fait une tentative de suicide. Le neveu séminariste maintenant dépucelé quitte le village avec une jolie jeune fille au grand désespoir de Perpetua, puis Tieta et Leonra s'en vont à leur tour par le car. Le maire est au désespoir et profite d'une panne inopinée du car pour rejoindre les deux femmes, Léonora descend et ils s'embrassent. Tieta repart seule mais heureuse. Au village une nuit une main anonyme débaptise la rue principale de la ville pour la renommer "rue Tieta de Agreste".

Billy, a fetish photographer who specializes in staged depictions of dead women, becomes involved in a murder mystery when one of his models turns up dead for real. Michael Bamfeaux, a depressed police detective, investigates the crime and probes Billy as to why he chooses to involve himself in the world of exploitation and fetish. Billy can not explain why he does what he does, except that he accepts that he is attracted to certain ideas and women. As the two men become friendlier, Michael becomes more involved in Billy's photoshoots. When Alex, Billy's girlfriend, is attacked by a jealous model with whom Billy and Alex had a threesome, Michael shoots and kills Alex's attacker. Michael later attempts to sell his memoirs, but a literary agent suggests that the story's loose ends and weak protagonist are not a good sell.

Georgette est la gérante du Lotus Club, un bordel à Bangkok, dont le compagnon est le propriétaire. Ce dernier meurt subitement sans avoir fait de testament. Le seul héritier est son frère, le père Maximin, un curé officiant dans un village du Sud-Ouest de la France. Afin de pouvoir continuer à gérer l'établissement Georgette et Ping, son amant décident de convaincre son beau-frère de venir s'installer en Thaïlande, et de lui faire croire que le bordel est en fait une institution catholique. Maximin hésite à faire ce voyage car il produit sur place un élixir miraculeux qui a beaucoup de succès mais Ping parvint à le convaincre qu'en le produisant en Asie, sa production en sera démultipliée. Dans l'avion il fait connaissance avec le consul d'Écosse qui part prendre ses fonctions, Suzie, la fille d'un général local, et Louise professeure d'expression corporelle. L'avion est détourné et nos quatre protagonistes sont parachutés dans le désert. Ils vont être recueillis par le Tête-de-fer, le pirate, qui va décider de vendre Louise, mais qui traite avec égards le consul d'Écosse, dans l'espoir d'obtenir une rançon. Ce dernier parvint à faire évader Maximim, Suzie et d'autres prisonnières. Avant que Maximim parvienne au Lotus Club, Georgette fait transformer l'espace d'un instant son bordel en salle de prière. Le curé est sur le point de tomber dans le panneau, mais voilà qu'interviennent des rebelles du général Choko qui, confondant le curé avec le consul d'Écosse, procèdent à son enlèvement. Sur place il retrouvera le vrai consul, ainsi que Louise qui contribuera à les faire évader. À la fin Georgette se mariera avec Ping, Suzie avec un jeune bonze défroqué, et Choko, le général rebelle, avec Louise. Quant à Maximim, il sera nommé évêque par le pape à condition que ce dernier touche 10 % de la recette de son élixir miracle. L’histoire ne dit pas ce qu'il advint du Lotus Club.
