Les événements se déroulent en 1927, dans le Transsibérien en route vers Moscou. La caméra filme l'entrée d'un tunnel, d'où jaillit un train à vapeur. La caméra se met à avancer elle-même sur la seconde voie, entrant dans le tunnel et dans le noir. Dans un compartiment de 1 classe, un homme lit son journal et fume le cigare. Devant lui, une voyageuse lit une revue. Elle lève le regard vers son voisin qui se penche et la chatouille sous le menton. Charmée, elle rit et il redouble de séduction. Il se débarrasse du journal, se lève et enlève son encombrant chapeau haut de forme. Il dépose un rapide baiser sur la bouche de la jeune dame qui pouffe de rire tandis qu'il se rassied et recoiffe son chapeau. Les rires de sa voisine l'encouragent. Il se lève de nouveau, pose sa coiffe sur la banquette et va embrasser une nouvelle fois la dame, puis se rassied, aplatissant son chapeau qu'il remet aussitôt en forme. Les deux voyageurs se replongent alors dans leur lecture. La caméra sort du tunnel.

Carl Schaffner (Steiger) is a crooked English (previously German) businessman who flees to Mexico after stealing company funds. While travelling by train, Schaffner decides to evade authorities. He drugs and switches identities with fellow train passenger Paul Scarff, who looks like him and has a Mexican passport. He throws Paul Scarff off the train, injuring Scarff. Carl later discovers that Scarff is wanted in Mexico as a political assassin. Carl then tracks down Scarff, who is resting from his injuries, to get back his original passport. Carl arrives in Mexico and is captured by the local police, who mistake him for Scarff. Carl then fights to show his true identity to the local police. The plan seems foolproof until he is forced to care for the dog of Scarff. The local police chief and Scotland Yard inspector Hadden conspire to keep him trapped in the Mexican border town of Katrina in an effort to get him to cross the bridge back into the U.S. and face justice. The misanthropic Schaffner has grown attached to Scarff's pet spaniel and is tricked into going across the dividing line of the bridge to get the dog. He is accidentally killed trying to escape the authorities. The final irony is that the discovery of his own humanity has cost the cynical, friendless Schaffner his life.

In 1906, Saxton (Christopher Lee), a renowned British anthropologist, is returning to Europe by the Trans-Siberian Express from China to Moscow. With him is a crate containing the frozen remains of a primitive humanoid creature that he discovered in a cave in Manchuria. He hopes it is a missing link in human evolution. Doctor Wells (Peter Cushing), Saxton's friendly rival and Royal Society colleague, is also on board but travelling separately. Before the train departs Shanghai, a thief is found dead on the platform. His eyes are completely white without irises or pupils, and a bystander initially mistakes him for a blind man. A monk named Father Pujardov (Alberto de Mendoza), the spiritual advisor to a Polish Count and Countess who are also waiting to board the train, proclaims the contents of the crate to be evil. Saxton furiously dismisses this as superstition. Saxton's eagerness to keep his scientific find secret arouses the suspicion of Wells, who bribes a porter to investigate the crate. The porter is killed by the ape-like creature within, which then escapes the crate by picking the lock.

D'un kolkhoze reculé de l'Altaï, Ivan Rastorgouïev et sa femme Nina partent pour une station thermale sur la mer Noire. Ils laissent derrière eux la vie villageoise, les champs à perte de vue, leurs amis, des tablées chantant les chansons populaires. Leur voyage dans le train est ponctué de situations tragicomiques provoquées par le décalage entre la mentalité de paysan et citadin. Ils y rencontrent un charmant voleur qui se fait passer auprès d'eux pour un ingénieur ferroviaire, leur fait boire du Cognac trouvé dans une valise dérobée dont il inspecte le contenu sur le champ, et s'enfuit à l'arrivée de la milice lancée à ses trousses. S'apercevant de leur erreur, les Rastorgouïev deviennent extrêmement méfiants et voient les criminels partout. Ainsi, ils mettent du temps à faire confiance au professeur linguiste qui se joint à eux dans le compartiment. Mais le brave homme finit par briser la glace et les invite à passer quelques jours chez lui à Moscou. Les Rastorgouïev y découvrent le quotidien d'une famille d'intellectuels et une multitude d'objets dont ils ne soupçonnaient pas l’existence. Ivan se trouve même invité à une conférence linguistique où il raconte devant un parterre médusé une anecdote de sa jeunesse. Puis, le couple poursuit son chemin vers la mer.
