Tidewater, Virginia 1808. The story begins at sea with the main protagonist, Crusoe (Aidan Quinn), en route to Africa to retrieve slaves. His ship runs into a powerful storm, and the entire crew perishes except for Crusoe. He eventually makes his way to a tropical island, where he is alone and stranded until he discovers that a dog and a small flock of geese have also survived. He befriends the dog, and gains a close ally. He initially encounters many challenges, but eventually manages to make himself at ease on the island. Later he finds a rifle inside the shipwreck, and, weapon in hand and dog by his side, begins exploring the island. After spending more time on the island, Crusoe stumbles upon a group of tribesmen who are indigenous to the area but not the island. He finds, to his horror, that they are cannibals.

Kim Seung-geun (Jung Jae-young) is deep in debt and his life seems completely hopeless. He jumps off a bridge into the Han River and washes up on the shore of Bamseom, which lies directly below the bridge. After searching the island he finds it is filled mostly with vegetation and surrounded by the city but too far to shout and he can't swim. He finds a duck-shaped boat and begins to like living on the island, free of his debt and worries of city life, though it is not easy.

In the South Pacific in 1944, U.S. Marine Corporal Allison (Robert Mitchum) and his reconnaissance party had been in the process of disembarking from a U.S. Navy submarine when they were discovered and fired upon by the Japanese. The submarine's captain was forced to dive and leave the scouting team behind. Allison got to a rubber raft and after days adrift, reaches an island. He finds an abandoned settlement and a chapel with one occupant: Sister Angela (Deborah Kerr), a novice nun who has not yet taken her final vows. She herself has been on the island for only four days; she came with an elderly priest to evacuate another clergyman, only to find the Japanese had arrived first. The frightened natives who had brought them to the island left the pair without warning, and the priest died soon after.

In the late 21st century, an interstellar war between humans (associated as the Bilateral Terran Alliance, or BTA) and Dracs (a Hermaphroditic humanoid race) is fought. The Milanese fashion guru Roberto Minghelli embarks with his wife on a cruise. One morning he wakes up in a now-sunken ship but is able to escape to an island, where he finds an abandoned hut which had a famous owner, Robinson Crusoe. Although the city slicker seems to be completely unsuitable for survival on a deserted island, Roberto adapts over time to his location and even leads a relatively happy life. An aircraft carrying young military school cadets returning home crash lands into the sea near a remote, uninhabited, jungle island in the Pacific Ocean. Among the survivors is the pilot, Captain Benson (Michael Greene), who is seriously injured and delirious. Meanwhile, on the beach, an overweight cadet, whose real name is never revealed, nicknamed “Piggy” (Danuel Pipoly), finds a conch seashell and takes it to the grouped cadets, who adopt it to signal the right to speak and be heard by the group. The senior cadet, and one of the elder boys, Cadet Colonel Ralph (Balthazar Getty), organizes a meeting to discuss surviving their predicament. Ralph and Jack (Chris Furrh) emerge dominant, with Ralph's seniority in rank making him the one in charge. They start a fire using Piggy's glasses to try and alert any passing craft. Tensions begin to grow between Ralph and Jack.

Le patrouilleur Smély (qui signifie littéralement « Audacieux » en français) arrête une embarcation japonaise dans l'espace maritime soviétique près de la Kamtchatka (à deux milles du port Zelyony Mys d'après le message codé intercepté). Les hommes qui tentent de se faire passer pour des pêcheurs s'avèrent être contrebandiers et espions. Ils sont arrêtés et remorqués sous la surveillance du capitaine assisté de marin Kositsyne qui restent sur leur navire. Dans la nuit, l'un des prisonniers réussit à scier le cordage qui retient leur embarcation. Une lutte s'engage entre le saboteur et le capitaine, ils passent par-dessus le bord. À ce moment une violente tempête éclate. Le petit navire dérive avec Kositsyne à la barre et les Japonais enfermés dans la cale.
