Now that Jeff has completed his military service and landed a lucrative job as an engineer, he and Gidget marry and move to Glossop, Maryland, where his new job is. Gidget finds that Jeff's company exerts far too much control over their lives, deciding where they will live and even choosing their friends for them. Gidget's rebellion against this lands Jeff in hot water, and their marriage is sorely tested.
Now in their late twenties and married, Gidget and Jeff live in Santa Monica, Jeff working as an architect and Gidget as a travel agent. They have no children of their own, but are looking after Gidget's niece Kim while Anne and John (Kim's parents) are in Europe.
The movie starts out when Johnny Kapahala (Brandon Baker) is living in Hawaii. Johnny has good friends, a great family, and a grandpa, the famous Johnny Tsunami (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), a surf legend who saved a group of survivors from a plane crash. But then, his father, Pete (Yuji Okumoto), gets a job transfer and makes his wife, Melanie (Mary Page Keller), and Johnny move to Vermont.
Mr. and Mrs. Mead (Mead and Viva) are a married couple renting a seaside mansion to a group of young male surfers. Their daughter (Ingrid Superstar) is pregnant and on the hunt for a husband. Mr. Mead, who is gay, tries to pawn her off to one of the surfers.
Set in a remote town on Australia's spectacular and rugged coastline in the early '70s, Drift tells the story of two brothers at the genesis of the modern surf industry.
The writer nearly drowned at Sandy beach, Hawaii in a rip current. The story was inspired partially by this moment. The other inspirations came from true stories on the North Shore.
