Real name Patmol, Sniffle
Sirius Black, surnommé Patmol (Padfoot en anglais) ou encore Sniffle, est un personnage de la saga Harry Potter, écrite par J. K. Rowling.
Il est principalement connu pour être le parrain de Harry Potter. Avec James Potter, Remus Lupin et Peter Pettigrow, il a formé durant sa scolarité à Poudlard le groupe des Maraudeurs. En opposition à sa famille, Sirius réprouve très tôt la suprématie des « sang-pur » et l'usage de la magie noire.
Black se retrouve à tort condamné pour le meurtre de douze Moldus et la trahison de Lily et James Potter en 1981, et devient le premier évadé connu de la prison d'Azkaban. Son évasion et son histoire constituent l'intrigue principale du troisième roman, Harry Potter et le Prisonnier d'Azkaban, dans lequel son personnage fait sa première apparition.
Sirius Black est interprété au cinéma par Gary Oldman (adulte), James Walter (à 17 ans) et Rohan Gotoberg (enfant).

Harry Potter is forced to defend himself against charges of using magic while underage, and in the presence of his Muggle cousin Dudley, after the two are attacked by Dementors. The Order of the Phoenix, a secret organisation founded by Albus Dumbledore, inform the now pending expulsion Harry that the Ministry of Magic is oblivious to Lord Voldemort's return; under the Ministry's influence, The Daily Prophet has launched a smear campaign towards Harry and Dumbledore following Harry's encounter with Voldemort at the end of the previous year. This encounter had a huge psychological effect on Harry – he has nightmares not only about what happened in the graveyard but also about the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic. While at the Order's headquarters, Harry's godfather, Sirius Black, mentions that Voldemort is after an object which he did not have last time.

Harry Potter, now aged 13, has been spending another dissatisfying summer at Privet Drive.
