Alan van Sprang (born June 19, 1971) is a Canadian actor best known for playing Sir Francis Bryan in the series The Tudors, appearing in the Living Dead films of George A. Romero and for playing King Henry on The CW's original series, Reign.

Before the dawn of man or beast, immortals waged war against each other in Heaven. The film begins with footage from a news cameraman and reporter, who are covering a story about an immigrant man killing his wife and son before committing suicide. The son and wife turn into zombies and kill several medical personnel and police officers but leave one medic and a reporter bitten before being killed. The narrator, Debra, explains most of the footage was never broadcast, but was recorded by the cameraman.

After Amanda Young seals him in the bathroom, Eric Matthews escapes his shackle by breaking his foot with a toilet tank cover. Six months later, he is still missing. A SWAT team led by Lieutenant Daniel Rigg discovers the site of a Jigsaw game in which the victim, Troy, had to escape a bomb by ripping chains from his body. Rigg calls Detectives Mark Hoffman and Allison Kerry, who is guilt-ridden over Matthews' disappearance, to the scene. Kerry points out that the door was welded shut, breaking Jigsaw's modus operandi of giving his victims a chance to escape. She is abducted from her home that night while reviewing Troy's tape and awakens in a harness that is hooked into her ribs. She manages to retrieve the key from a suspended beaker of acid and unlocking it before the timer expires, but it tears her rib cage apart anyway, killing her.

Years after a zombie apocalypse, survivors have set up outposts across the United States, one of which, in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, contains a feudal-like government. Bordered on two sides by rivers and on the third by an electric fence, the city has become a sanctuary, with the rich and powerful living in a luxury high-rise called Fiddler's Green while the rest of the population subsists in squalor. The city's ruler Paul Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) has sponsored Dead Reckoning, a heavily armored vehicle that can travel through the zombie-infested areas with ease. Armed with remote-controlled heavy machine guns and video cameras, Dead Reckoning functions as a moving fireworks launch base, on the premise that zombies are fascinated by fireworks and will stare at them, ignoring their environment. Riley Denbo (Simon Baker), designer and commander of Dead Reckoning, has recently retired. Unlike Kaufman, Riley is respected for his work in protecting the city from danger, as well as for bringing critical food and medical supplies which the citizens can no longer acquire safely themselves.

The situation worsens as Franklin Laszlo (Tom Arnold), the desperate owner of Laszlo Bros. Carnival who had been contemplating a bank robbery of Puget Savings and Loan, robs the robbers and takes Daniel and the kids hostage in their Toyota Previa van as his truck is blocked by an armored car. A comedic car chase ensues through Seattle. Daniel discovers the kids do not really respect him and they react better to Franklin.
