Aleksei Balabanov (25 February 1959 – 18 May 2013) was a popular Russian filmmaker. He was best known for the 1997 crime film Brat (English title: Brother), and its more action-oriented sequel, Brat-2 (Brother 2), both of which starred Sergei Bodrov, Jr. as a novice hit man. Brother was successful both at the box office and in video copies, achieving wide popularity in Russia. Later, however, Balabanov became better known for his shocking and controversial films Cargo 200 (2007) and Morphine (2008).

Biography

En 1981, il est diplômé de la Faculté de traduction de l'Université linguistique de Gorki. De 1983 à 1987, il travaille comme assistant aux studios de cinéma de Sverdlovsk. En 1990, il obtient le diplôme de réalisateur des Cours supérieurs de formation des scénaristes et réalisateurs, où il étudie à l'atelier du cinéma d'auteur dirigé par Boris Galanter .

Après plusieurs courts métrages, il réalise en 1992 Les Jours heureux, un drame social inspiré des œuvres de Samuel Beckett dont l'action est transposée à Saint-Pétersbourg. Le film sera présenté hors compétition au Festival de Cannes 1992.

En 1999, un Nika du meilleur réalisateur lui est remis pour Des monstres et des hommes (1998), partagé avec Otar Iosseliani récompensé pour Brigands, chapitre VII (1996).

Le 18 mai 2013, il meurt d'une crise cardiaque dans une station thermale de Sestroretsk, alors qu'il travaille sur un nouveau scénario. Il est enterré au Cimetière orthodoxe de Smolensk sur l'île Vassilievski de Saint-Pétersbourg.

Artemy (Leonid Gromov), professor of Scientific Atheism at the Leningrad State University, is visiting his brother in a small town neighboring Leninsk. There he meets Valery (Leonid Bichevin), a young man who is dating his niece and has come to take her to a party. On the way back from Leninsk to Leningrad Artemy's car breaks down and he goes into an isolated farmhouse to get help. Artemy gets to talking with the farmhouse owner, Alexey (Aleksei Serebryakov). The two drink together homemade alcohol and argue about faith in God and retribution from sins, the professor defending the Soviet atheist worldview. Artemy also encounters Alexey's wife, Antonina (Natalya Akimova), as well as Sunka (Mikhail Skryabin), a Vietnamese worker working at the farm, who seems to be practically a personal slave of Alexey's, and a third stranger who is not explained at the time. Sunka worker finally fixes Artemy's car and the professor drives on. Being too drunk, he prefers to return to his brother.

The film begins with the main character Ivan Yermakov (Alexei Chadov) being interviewed, and as he begins his story the films cuts to the spring of 2000, during the Second Chechen War, shortly after the fall of Grozny. A Chechen warlord Aslan Gugayev (Giorgi Gurgulia) runs a camp next to a mountain aul in the Chechen highlands. Despite having secure income from his organized crime gangs in Moscow, Saint Peterburg and Samara as well as some legitimate business there, he takes joy in kidnapping, since that is more patriotic and militant than random crime. Both Ivan and his comrade Fyodka were enslaved after they were taken prisoners in early 2000. The main hero, Danila Bagrov (Sergey Bodrov Jr.), comes to Moscow because he wants to study medicine and become a doctor. The film begins after the protagonist, Danila Bagrov (Sergei Bodrov Jr.) returns to his small hometown following the demobilisation from the Russian Army.
