Biography
Alfonso Bedoya débute au cinéma en 1935, et participe en tout à 77 films, exclusivement mexicains jusqu'en 1947. Ainsi, il apparaît en 1942 dans Les Trois Mousquetaires de Miguel M. Delgado, une des nombreuses adaptations du roman éponyme d'Alexandre Dumas, avec Cantinflas. Parmi ses autres partenaires mexicains, mentionnons Pedro Armendáriz et Arturo de Córdova. En 1947, il collabore à son premier film américain (Bells of San Fernando) et l'année suivante (1948), il joue l'un de ses rôles les mieux connus, celui du chef de bande mexicain, dans Le Trésor de la Sierra Madre de John Huston, aux côtés d'Humphrey Bogart. Don Arturo Bordega (Cornel Wilde) is part of the old Spanish nobility, and a vocal advocate for California'a annexation by the United States. On his way to a secret meeting in support of that goal, he is attacked by bandits led by José Martínez (Alfonso Bedoya), but narrowly escapes. The planned "guest of honor" at the secret meeting to which Bordega is en route, is none other than then-U.S. Army Captain John Charles Fremont. Martinez's thugs attempt to assassinate Fremont while he is traveling to the same meeting, but succeed only in lightly wounding him. It is subsequently revealed that the corrupt Brios brothers, Ernesto (Eugene Iglesias) and Fredo (John Dehner) have paid Martinez to violently oppose the movement advocating American annexation of California, as part of their unscrupulous plot to deliver California to the imperial domain of the Russian Czar (in exchange for a promise to appoint first Ernesto, and later Fredo, as the Russian colonial governor).

The story concerns 13th-century Saxon nobleman Walter of Gurnie (Tyrone Power), who, after sparking an unsuccessful rebellion against the Norman conquerors of his homeland, sets out to seek his fortune in the Far East during the times of Pax Mongolica. The film follows the standard story about Captain Blood. An Irishman banished for his treatment on a wounded rebel during the Monmouth Rebellion, Dr. Peter Blood has become a feared buccaneer on the high seas. King Charles II of Spain (Curt Bois) thus calls upon the Marquis de Riconete to capture the evasive Captain Blood and end his attacks upon Spanish ships. Blood is safe until he docks to resupply his crew; while his men are out they are betrayed by their supplier, the slave trader George Fairfax.
