Alice Wu (伍思薇), née en 1970 à San José en Californie, est une réalisatrice et scénariste américaine de cinéma.

Biography

Alice Wu est née et a grandi à San Jose en Californie, avant d'étudier à Los Altos. En 1990, elle reçoit un Bachelor of Arts en informatique à l'université Stanford, puis un Masters en 1992. Elle travaille un temps chez Microsoft à Seattle où elle conçoit des logiciels. Elle quitte ensuite son emploi pour se consacrer au cinéma à plein temps.

En 2001, le scénario de son film Saving Face, inspiré de sa propre expérience de lesbienne dans la communauté chinoise-américaine, remporte un prix de la CAPE (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment). Saving face est remarqué dans la communauté homosexuelle.

En 2007, son nouveau projet de film, Foreign Babes in Beijing (sortie prévue en 2008), est basé sur l'essai de Rachel DeWoskin : Une étrangère à Pékin.

Saving Face follows Wilhelmina ("Wil"), a young Chinese American surgeon living in New York. The main plot revolves around her mother spontaneously coming to live with her for being pregnant out of wedlock (and thus kicked out of her father's house) while overcoming the difficulties of being closet while dating her lover, Vivian. Wil struggles with allocating time between her mother (Gao) who is shunned by the rest of the Chinese American community of Flushing for being pregnant and unwed and thus has come to live with Wil.
