Dhumal (29 March 1914 – 13 February 1987) was an actor in Bollywood films known for playing character roles. He acted in many movies and was active from the mid 1940s till the late 1980s. He started his acting career from Marathi theatre, which paved way for Marathi cinema and later he moved to Hindi cinema, where he mostly played comedy roles and late in career character roles. He worked in notable films like, Howrah Bridge (1958), Bombai Ka Babu (1960), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Gumnaam (1965), Do Badan (1966), Love in Tokyo (1966) and Benaam (1974).

Mohan Kumar is a very honest and conscientious man and is working as general manager of a Shipping company owned by his very good friend, Dinesh. Dinesh is a widower and his daughter, Roma is very attached to Mohan Kumar, his wife Sumitra and son Ravi. Jugal Kishore, Bhandari and Balwant are a notorious gang of smugglers and all are working under Mohan Kumar in the same shipping company. By a sheer co-incidence Mohan Kumar comes to know of their activities and apprehending police station, these three plan the murder of Dinesh and very deviously frame Mohan Kumar for the murder of Dinesh. Mohan Kumar is helpless and cannot prove his innocence in the court and is sentenced to Life Imprisonment. His wife is also killed in an accident because of these three villains.

Popular musician Amrit Kumar Saxena usually performs on stage to entertain his fans. On one occasion he red-handily caught Bhagwat Singh alias B.K. stealing priceless jewelery but instead of reporting this to the police Amrit keep this to himself. B.K. then schemes with his girlfriend, Luska to frame Amrit for the stolen jewelery resulting in him getting sentence to jail for two years. But Amrit gets release within a year due to good conduct; it is here he thinks about closing in on B.K. and Luska resulting in a physical exercise which ends up leaving Luska dead. For fear of another arrest Amrit flee the scene only to end up boarding a train; here he gets to meet his childhood friend Vijay, his wife, Juhi and their son, Munna. Unfortunately the train meets in an accident resulting in the death of Juhi and Vijay. Amrit then reaches Munna to Juhi's residence to be introduced to her father, Mr. Sinha who recognizes him as his son-in-law, Vijay and refuses to part with him; while Amrit is apprehensive to stay he is convinced by the family's doctor that Mr. Sinha is a heart patient. It is then Amrit decides to stay on and help Mr. Sinha pull together his business; it is here Amrit starts to develop feelings for this family and Mr. Sinha decides to make him his heir to all his assets. Time passes and Amrit starts to fall in love with Juhi's sister, Reshmi only to be told that Juhi is still alive albeit with a blank memory. Juhi returns home with Dr. Joshi who is none other than Bhagwat Singh who wants to utilize this opportunity to not only expose Amrit's true reality to the Sinhas but to settle scores with Amrit for the death of his girlfriend.

A wealthy businessman Girdhari Lal is murdered by his cousin Dhanpat Rai (Bharat Kapoor) for the sake of wealth. Girdhari Lal's daughter Sapna (Sarika) is in love with Vinod (Deepak Parashar). Dhanpat Rai despises Sapna's relationship with Vinod and shifts her to a hostel. However the two decide to go straight with Dhanpat Rai and head to his grand manor. Gaurishankar Srivastav (Sunder Purohit) lives with his wife Savitri (Nirupa Roy) and two sons Vikas (Sujit Kumar) and Ravi (Jeetendra). Vikas gets married to wealthy Nanda (Bindu) while Ravi continues his education in college. Ravi is attracted to Usha (Sulakshana Pandit) and hopes to marry her. Gaurishankar is nearing retirement while Vikas is unable to get employment. When Vikas get an offer, he must deposit ₹ 5000. Nanda borrows this money from her uncle and Vikas gets the job. Unaware of the fact, Gaurishankar who works as Cashier in a small firm, steals Rs.5000/- to provide money for his son, but is followed by the watchman. On his way to home, Ravi returning from a Tamasha catches the thief, but is shocked to find his father as thief. To save him from the punishment, he takes the blame on himself. Later Police arrests Ravi for stealing ₹ 5000 from his employer, which shocks his father. The Court finds him guilty and sentences imprisonment for 3 months. Gaurishankar passes away after hearing this, but before death he informs his wife who the real thief was. Savitri is unabel to reveal this fact to anybody. When Ravi completes his sentence, returns home and finds that Usha is getting married to Rakesh (Rakesh Roshan), Dinanath's son. He re-locates to Bombay, gets a job, earns well and sends money to his mother which actually does not reach the right hands as the middle lady Bindu manages to get the money by making false thumb impression. The turn of events after Usha meets Ravi again is the rest of the story when every fact is made open to everybody. The story is scene by scene based on old Bollywood family drama 'maa' starring bharat bhushan and mala sinha.
