The plot is linked with the previous film Bhoothnath. When Bhoothnath, although his real name in the two films is Kailash Nath, (Amitabh Bachchan) enters the Bhoothworld, (a ghosts' world) he is mocked and questioned about his abilities as a ghost as he was unsuccessful to scare any child. To redeem himself, he returns to Earth where he tries his best to scare children but is unsuccessful with his attempts. However, a boy named Akhrot (Parth Bhalerao) can see him in his true form. Akhrot is not scared of Bhoothnath, but helps him to scare a few children. In return, he asks Bhoothnath to act scared of him and to run away from a haunted house while he chants mantras in front of his friends, so that his friends can accept him in their cricket team. Bhoothnath decides to help him further by helping him earn money by giving ghosts living in under-construction high rises peace by fulfilling the wishes they were still staying back on Earth as ghosts for. In the process, they come to know why the ghosts died, and help their families get insurance money by scaring corrupt insurance officers. In the process, he gets to know about Bhau (Boman Irani), a former criminal who is now a corrupt politician. After having seen the amount of corruption in India and encouraged by Akhrot, Bhoothnath decides to contest the upcoming elections. Soon, the rivalry between Bhoothnath and Bhau heats up, to the extent that Bhoothnath sacrifices his powers to win. One day before the elections, a rally is to be held by Bhoothnath to encourage a high turnout on election day. Bhau's men threaten to kill Akhrot unless he prevents the rally from happening, but Akhrot refuses and is ready to face the consequences. On the day of the rally, Bhau's men injure Akhrot grievously for his non-compliance, which makes Bhoothnath leave his rally to be with Akhrot in the hospital. He goes to the Bhoothworld and begs for Akhrot's life. They tell him that if Bhoothnath wins the election, they will spare Akhrot's life. Meanwhile, Bhau uses Bhoothnath's absence at the rally to his advantage and tries to influence the audience to vote for him. However, on election day, the majority of the public voted for Bhoothnath. The next day, Bhootnath sees Akhrot's heartbeat rising and realises that he won the election. The film ends with Akhrot regaining consciousness and everybody celebrating the success of Bhoothnath.

John Day is a bank manager of Royal Citizen Co-operative Bank and lives with his wife Maria Day. The couple has recently lost their only daughter in a forest fire accident while she was on a trip with her boyfriend. Maria is always depressed and never opens up with anyone. One day when John is away for office work, a courier-boy enters the house and takes Maria as a captive. He then calls up John informing him about his wife is a hostage and tells him that a man will visit him at his bank and John has to do his work. It is shown that actually it was a planned bank heist where the visitor gagged John, opened up the cash locker and fled, meanwhile the kidnapper hammered Maria causing her a serious brain damage and she got admitted to the hospital in a state of coma.

Shiva (Akshay Kumar) is a small-time thief in Mumbai who falls in love with Paro (Sonakshi Sinha). He tells her the truth about being a thief and resolves to give up crime because he loves Paro dearly. Before that, he decides to commit a large robbery along with his con-friend 2G (Paresh Ganatra), which would enable him to earn a lot of money; hence he can give up crime. The film revolves around a struggling road constructor, Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar). He dreams big, but there seems to be no chance of his dreams coming true as he doesn't have any money to bribe the bureaucracy. His family have lost faith in him, telling him to earn money. To make matters worse, the new Municipal Commissioner turns out to be his former girlfriend, Gehna Ganpule (Trisha Krishnan), who now hates him. His brothers-in-law Trigun (Manoj Joshi), Suhas Vichare (Milind Gunaji), and his elder brother (Paritosh Sand) were all responsible for a bridge collapsing case in which many people were killed. They were helped by a politician named Sanjay Rana (Jaideep Ahlawat). After being saved by their driver Vishwas Rao, (Tinu Anand) they kill him fearing he would reveal the truth. Meanwhile Sanjay's lustful eyes fall on Sachin's sister Anjali (Urvashi Sharma). Sachin warns him by slapping him in his office. Meanwhile Azad Bhagat (Makrand Deshpande) wants justice as his family were killed in that accident. Anjali is married to Sanjay, unbeknownst to Sachin, when he confronts his father he reprimands him, saying he has no right to say he didn't know anything because he has no money to send his sister off. After losing contact, he learns she has been attempting to contact him and goes to their house, seeing Azad escape from Sanjay's house. He then learns of Anjali's death because a cooker exploded. Devastating the whole family, especially Sachin himself, who is suspicious. He then meets Azad again at the municipal office, he learns of Azad's intentions and that he had stolen evidence which would put the people involved, behind bars. They both then agree to help each other to reveal the corruptness behind the construction of the bridge. Sanjay hires masked robbers, who kill Azad, who was on his way to court. At the hospital, while Azad is dying in Sachin's arms, he reveals that while he was stealing the evidence, he saw Sachin's sister being raped by Sanjay and his friends, now speculating whether she was murdered or if she committed suicide. In an attempt to make sure the evidence isn't revealed, Sanjay steals it after robbing Azad's house, a fight ensues between Sanjay and Sachin, Sanjay is then killed after being run over and Sachin successfully retrieves the evidence. Sachin's brother and brothers-in-law are arrested, and the whole family begin belittling him, claiming he was jealous of them and unlike his successful brothers, and blaming him for tarnishing the family name. Sachin then argues back that, they didn't lose anyone and he had to deal with the pain of losing Anjali the most. He agrees to leave, until his father stops him and realises his honesty and trustworthiness, re-kindling their relationship.
