Antonia Bird, FRSA (27 May 1951 – 24 October 2013) was an English television drama and feature film director.

Biography

Théâtre
Antonia Bird naît en 1951 dans une famille de théâtre, son père est comédien et sa mère régisseuse.

Elle occupe différents postes dans un théâtre de province, et essaie de jouer la comédie, mais abandonne en raison de son trac. Elle s'oriente alors vers la mise en scène. Elle intègre une compagnie et dirige des pièces au Phoenix theatre de Leicester. À la fin des années 1970, elle est en résidence au Royal Court Theatre de Londres, où elle joue et met en scène des pièces contemporaines et d'avant-garde de Hanif Kureishi, Trevor Griffiths ou bien encore Jim Cartwright .


Télévision

En 1985, les producteurs du soap opera EastEnders, diffusé sur la chaîne BBC One, font appel à elle. Elle réalise 17 épisodes du feuilleton. Elle dirige également des épisodes de la série télévisée Casualty et une mini-série de cinq épisodes, The Men's Room.

Antonia Bird réalise de nombreux téléfilms parmi lesquels Safe en 1993, dans lequel elle emploie pour la première fois un de ses acteurs fétiches, Robert Carlyle. Le téléfilm est récompensé aux British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA).


Cinéma

Prêtre (Priest) sort en salles avant d'être diffusé par la BBC. Il est distingué au festival international du film de Toronto en 1994. L'année suivante, lors de la Berlinale, il reçoit un Teddy Award dans la catégorie « prix du public ».

During the Mexican-American War (1846 – 1848), Second Lieutenant Boyd fights in the United States Army (Boyd is a former officer in the Army of the Republic of Texas, that merged with the US Army in 1846 - he still wears the Texas Army rank insignia of second lieutenant: one five pointed star on each shoulder strap). But in battle his courage fails him, and, to avoid being killed, he plays dead—while his unit is massacred. He is transported along with the other dead (with his commanding officer's blood dripping into his mouth) back to the Mexican headquarters. However, in a moment of sudden bravery, he captures the Mexican command. For his heroism Boyd is promoted to Captain, but when his commanding officer learns of the cowardice by which his victory was achieved, he exiles Boyd to the remote Fort Spencer in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Five men, criminals Ray, Dave, Stevie, Julian ("Julie" as a nickname), and Jason, plan a heist to steal a minimum of £2 million. In Seattle, straight-laced Matt Leland (O'Donnell) falls in love with Casey Roberts (Barrymore), the new girl at their high school who's from Chicago. They begin a sexual relationship. The film is set initially in Northern Iraq, 2003, two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Ahmed, a 12-year-old boy begrudgingly follows in the shadow of his grandmother. On hearing news that prisoners of war have been found alive in the South, she is determined to discover the fate of her missing son, Ahmed’s father, who never returned from the Gulf war in 1991. From the mountains of Kurdistan to the sands of Babylon, they hitch rides from strangers and cross paths with fellow pilgrims, on all too similar journeys.
