Antonio Pietrangeli (né le 19 janvier 1919 à Rome – mort le 12 juillet 1968 à Gaète) est un scénariste, dialoguiste et réalisateur italien.
Il passe à la réalisation en 1953 avec Du soleil dans les yeux. Même quand ils prennent un tour plus dramatique, la plupart de ses films ont été écrits en collaboration avec Ettore Scola et Ruggero Maccari, parfois avec Agenore Incrocci et Furio Scarpelli (Age et Scarpelli), les quatre grands scénaristes et piliers de la comédie à l'italienne. Antonio Pietrangeli est connu pour s'être intéressé à la condition féminine dans la société italienne, à une époque où ce thème n'était pas ou peu traité, notamment dans Adua et ses compagnes, film qui contribua beaucoup à sa renommée, La Parmigiana et Je la connaissais bien.
Il est le père de l'auteur-interprète militant et réalisateur Paolo Pietrangeli. Il meurt noyé accidentellement durant le tournage de son film Quand, comment et avec qui ? (Comme, quando, perché) : Valerio Zurlini le remplace alors pour assurer la fin du tournage.

Biography
Après des études de médecine, Antonio Pietrangeli devient critique de cinéma pour différents journaux. Au lendemain de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, il collabore à l'écriture de scénarios pour des réalisateurs comme Gianni Franciolini, Pietro Germi, Alessandro Blasetti, Mario Camerini, Roberto Rossellini, Alberto Lattuada. Auparavant, il participa au scénario des Amants diaboliques (Ossessione) de Visconti, œuvre-phare du néoréalisme.Il passe à la réalisation en 1953 avec Du soleil dans les yeux. Industrialist George (Alexander Knox) and his wife Irene (Bergman) are a wealthy couple living in post-war Rome with their son Michele (Sandro Franchina), and they host so many parties that their son feels neglected. Lors d'une réception à Turin, Paola, mal mariée avec le riche industriel Marco qui collectionne les aventures féminines, fait la connaissance du séduisant Alberto Pegasano, un ami de son mari venu d'Argentine pour affaires. The Magnificent Cuckold is about a hat tycoon who is ecstatically, if not hungrily, in love with his youthful wife. It is all blissful, that is, until our man, middle-aged and somewhat of a square among his blasé, upper-class friends to whom cuckoldry is a common practice, is seduced by one of them. At this point doubts and suspicions, like conscience, begin to plague him. If he could succumb to extramarital confections, why not his gorgeous mate? Quickly his love for his spouse degenerates beyond obsessive, into the realm of maniacal. He becomes madly concerned that his wife is cheating on him --even though she is not being unfaithful. When he looks at her it becomes obvious to him that she is a very attractive woman. And, all the men around her must be dying to be with her. Deux célibataires, Pina et Adolfo, après s'être contactés par le biais d'une petite annonce, font leur première rencontre au cours d'un dimanche à la campagne. In 1958 the Merlin law made brothels illegal in Italy. Adua, Lolita, Marilina and Millie are four prostitutes whose brothel in Rome is shut down. Under Adua's leadership, they pool their savings, 500,000 lire apiece, to open a restaurant on the outskirts of Rome. They buy a run-down building, and hire workmen to fix it up, but when they apply to open the restaurant, their permit is rejected because of their history of prostitution. One of Adua's former customers, Ercoli, agrees to buy the building, use his connections, and get the permit in his name, but he expects them to run the restaurant as a front and work as a brothel on the upper floors, in return for a rent of 1 million lire a month.

The accountant Paolo Anselmi is a confirmed bachelor who finds himself having to do the best man for a friend's business partner.
