Sam Dietz (Leo Rossi) is a rookie Los Angeles detective recently transferred from New York City. He is paired up with veteran detective Bill Malloy (Robert Loggia) in order to find and stop a serial killer. The killer is Arthur "Buck" Taylor (Judd Nelson), the son of a former LAPD cop whose motive for killing is frustration over not having been accepted to the force and failure in the eyes of his father. Taylor chooses his targets by randomly looking up their names in the phone book and skillfully covering up his tracks by using his skills and knowledge that he learned while on the force. Le jour de son entrée à l'Université, Shane rencontre Brandon, son camarade de chambre et membre de son équipe de lutte. Très vite, ils deviennent très amis, au point de Brandon emmène Shane chez lui pour le week-end. Tout se passe très bien entre les deux colocataires jusqu’à ce qu'un autre membre de l'équipe fasse sous-entendre à Shane que Brandon se lient d'amitié très rapidement pour ensuite très rapidement oublier ses amis. Cela rappelle à Shane ce que son père lui répétait constamment qu'il « ne ferait rien de sa vie » et qu'il était « un bon à rien ». Shane se met alors à douter et commence à espionner Brandon, notamment en installant un logiciel espion sur son ordinateur. Lorsque Brandon s'en rend compte, il est furieux et décide de déménager. Puis, un jour alors que Brandon part en randonnée, Shane le rattrape et ils se disputent. Brandon tombe dans un ravin et alors que Shane a l'occasion de lui sauver la vie, il le laisse tomber après lui avoir demandé si son colocataire a parlé de leur différend à ses parents, ce qu'il n'avait pas fait. Shane décide alors d'aller à l'enterrement puis va voir les parents de Brandon qui décident de l'héberger. Rapidement, une relation amoureuse se développe entre Caren, la mère de Brandon, et Shane.

On a beach in Australia, two American surfers say goodbye to each other as one is about to leave for his flight back to California. The two men don't notice the large number of dead birds on the beach. On the flight, the surfer returning home starts coughing up blood and dies before the plane can land. Back in Australia, the other surfer is found dead in his apartment. Kayla Martin (Tiffani Thiessen) is a medical doctor with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who has been assigned to the case. She and the local officials carry the body of the surfer out of the plane and start processing people to be put in quarantine until they can be evaluated for exposure. During the transfer, one of the passengers escapes to complete a business deal and unknowingly spreads the virus throughout Los Angeles. It is also revealed that outbreaks of the so-called "riptide virus" (as it comes to be known), an offshoot of the bird flu, are occurring in other cities around the world.
