Biography
His wife Florence died of an overdose of sleeping tablets in 1961 after suffering from poor health. Mullard continued to live in a council house in Islington after his success, and spent much of his free time in local pubs. He died in his sleep on 11 December 1995, aged 85.He wrote an autobiography Oh Yus It's Arthur Mullard.

American video game designer Roger Dearly (Jeff Daniels) lives with his pet dalmatian, Pongo, in London. One day, he takes Pongo for a walk in St. James's Park, and he sets his eyes on a beautiful female dalmatian named Perdita. After a frantic chase through the streets of London, Roger and Pongo discover that Perdita likes Pongo; and her owner, Anita Campbell-Green (Joely Richardson), falls in love with Roger when they meet. Framing Story Five strangers board a descending lift, one by one, in a modern office block in London. They reach the sub-basement, though none of them have pressed for that destination. There they find a large, elaborately furnished room which appears to be a gentlemen's club. The lift door has closed and there are no buttons to bring it back, nor any other exit. Resigned to waiting for help, they settle down with drinks and talk. The conversation turns to dreams, and each man tells of a recurring nightmare.

Three of the company's buses are wrecked due to Stan's negligent bus driving, which means Stan (Reg Varney), Jack (Bob Grant) and Inspector Blake (Stephen Lewis) are sacked. Stan and Jack get a job as bus crew at a Pontins holiday camp in Prestatyn, North Wales, only to find that Blakey has also got a job at the camp, as security inspector. Stan invites the family to stay (using his staff discount) whilst he proceeds to chat up the guests and staff. Tight fisted Arthur refuses to pay the train fare, instead relying on his ever present motorcycle and sidecar to take the Butlers to the camp. They meet Stan on the road, who accidentally forces them into a kerb causing all the luggage to land in a river and all the family's clothes are ruined.

Set in the 1910s, the story opens with a montage of European Grand Prix races in which a particular car appears to win every race. In the final race, the car swerves to avoid a girl and a dog, loses control, crashes, and catches fire, bringing its racing career to an end. The car ends up in an old garage in rural England, where two children, Jeremy and Jemima Potts, have grown fond of it. They are told by a junkman that he intends to buy the car from the garage owner for scrap. The children (who live with their widowed father Caractacus Potts, an eccentric inventor, and his equally peculiar father) implore their father to buy the car before the junkman does, but he does not have the money. While playing truant, they meet Truly Scrumptious, a beautiful upper class woman with her own motorcar. She brings them home to report their truancy to their father. Truly shows interest in Caractacus' odd inventions, but he is affronted by her insistence that his children should be in school.

Brenda (Rita Tushingham) and Yvonne (Lynn Redgrave), two girls from the North of England, arrive in London to seek fame and fortune. Morgan Delt (David Warner) is a failed artist and son of communist parents who own a fish and chips shop in downmarket London. His upper-class wife, Leonie (Vanessa Redgrave), has given up on him and has just secured a divorce in order to marry Charles Napier (Robert Stephens), an art gallery owner of her own social standing. Given the innately rich and personal world of fantasy Morgan has locked himself into, he goes off the deep end. He performs a series of bizarre stunts in a campaign to win back Leonie, including putting a skeleton in Leonie's bed, blowing up her bed as Leonie's mother is on it, and crashing her wedding dressed as a gorilla, for which scene Reisz borrows clips from the original King Kong film to illustrate Morgan's fantasy world.

At a point in the distant future, the inhabitants of Planet Earth have become divided into two factions who despise each other. In Beatland live the hip and trendy people who have long hair, dress in turtlenecks, jeans and sunglasses and listen to cool beat music. Their counterparts on Ballad Isle keep their hair short and tidy, wear button-down shirts and pressed slacks or floral dresses and twinsets, and listen exclusively to crooners. A musical competition is staged annually between the two sides, overseen by the neutral and powerful record company executive Mr. A&R (Thornton). For the rest of the year they regard each other with suspicion and antipathy, although they are not above sneaking into each other's territory to steal musical ideas.
