Barbara Brylska (born 5 June 1941) is a Polish actress who was also featured in numerous films throughout the countries of the Warsaw Pact including the Soviet Union. She is noted especially for her role as Nadya in the 1975 Soviet comedy film Irony of Fate.

Biography

Barbara Brylska was born on June 5, 1941, in Skotniki, near Łódź, Poland. At the age of 15, she was cast in the film Kalosze szczescia. After this role, she took acting lessons in a theater school and became a student at the National Film School in Łódź. In 1967 she completed her acting education at the Warsaw School of Theatre, Film and Television.

Brylska's first major role was in the film Ich dzień powszedni (1963). In 1966 she played the Phoenician priestess Kama in the feature film Pharaoh (Polish: Faraon), based on the novel by Bolesław Prus.

Apart from Polish-directed movies, she has also played in films directed by Soviet, Czechoslovak and Bulgarian directors.

For her role as Nadya in the 1975 film Irony of Fate, directed by Eldar Ryazanov, she received a Soviet state award. Her acceptance of this award created controversy in her home country. Nonetheless she became a popular actress in the Soviet Union. She would later claim that her success caused jealousy in the Polish film community and led it to ignore her work.

In 1977 she was a member of the jury at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival.

Since 2000 Brylska has been acting in stage plays, primarily in Russia. She reprised the role of the aged Nadya in the 2007 Irony of Fate: The Sequel.

The film opens during the production of War and Peace at Mosfilm Studios in 1964. An elderly Russian noblewoman is set to appear as a film extra until her past comes to light. Although the film's political commissar demands her dismissal since she is a "wife of an enemy of the revolution", director Sergei Bondarchuk is adamant that he needs faces like hers for the production. As the commissar realises the difficulty of identifying her using the file he has, he immediately recognises the elderly woman behind him as the woman he is searching for, while the elderly woman is looking at her own 1910s photo.

The characters from the first film now have children, who have managed to get into the same situation as their parents many years ago. However, this story is not simply a remake of the original movie. Firstly, all of Lukashin's adventures were accidental, whereas here everything is done according to a plan thought up by Pavlik (a friend of Lukashin's). His idea is to help his friend Evgeniy with his loneliness. To this end, he dispatches Lukashin's son Kostya to Petersburg, where he acts in the same manner as his father 30 years ago. In flat 12 he meets Nadejda (who is actually the daughter of Nadejda from the first movie). She has a fiancé called Irakliy, a businessman. Kostantin's task is to lure Iracliy away from the flat, then wait for Nadejda's mother to come; he then makes her call Evgeniy Lukashin. Pavlik persuades Evgeniy to go to St. Petersburg. The plot becomes a story of two fights over a woman: Konstantin vs. Irakliy and Evgeniy vs. Ippolit. Finally Lukashins win the competition, because Irakliy turns out to be too dull for Nadya and Nadejda understands that she was never in love with Ippolit.

The key subplot is the drab uniformity of Brezhnev era public architecture. This is made explicit in a humorous animated prologue, in which architects are overruled by politicians and red tape. This results in the entire planet being polluted with identical, unimaginative multistory apartment buildings of the sort that can, in fact, be found in every city, town, and suburb across the former Soviet Union. These buildings are uniform right down to the door key of each apartment. The rest of the film is live-action.

Ce film décrit les manipulations de prêtres et hauts-prêtres conservateurs à l'encontre du nouveau monarque Ramsès XIII, trop progressiste à leurs yeux, et qu'ils finiront par éliminer en jouant de la crédulité populaire.
