Biography
Basil Dean débute comme acteur au théâtre dans les années 1900, avant de s'orienter vers la mise en scène et la production à partir des années 1920, tant en Angleterre qu'à Broadway (New York). Il est également l'auteur de quelques pièces, la plus connue étant sans doute Tessa, la nymphe au cœur fidèle, adaptation d'un roman de Margaret Kennedy, plusieurs fois transposée à l'écran (voir filmographie ci-dessous).Au cinéma, il réalise quinze films (majoritairement britanniques) entre 1929 et 1940, dont il est souvent également producteur et scénariste. Il exerce en outre ces deux dernières fonctions pour le compte d'autres réalisateurs, entre 1928 et 1952, au cinéma principalement, mais aussi à la télévision naissante (deux téléfilms en 1938).

Angleterre, 1673. This romance is set in Tyrol, western Austria. Previously filmed in 1928, the sentimental Margaret Kennedy novel The Constant Nymph was sumptuously remade by Gaumont-British Picture Corporation in 1933. Victoria Hopper plays the title character, a rich, Belgian gamine named Tessa Sanger. The girl falls hopelessly in love with world-famous composer Lewis Dodd (Brian Aherne), who is so full of himself that he barely acknowledges Tessa's existence. As she looks on in quiet desperation, Dodd marries another woman, his distant cousin Florence (Leonora Corbett). It takes him nearly the entire picture to realize what a fool he's been, and that Tessa was the one girl for him all along—but alas, it's too late. The Constant Nymph was remade by Warner Bros. in 1943, at which time all prints of the 1933 version were supposed to be destroyed, however, several prints did survive.

While a houseguest at an upper-class gathering, wealthy Jew Ferdinand de Levis is robbed of £1,000 with evidence pointing towards the guilt of another guest, Captain Dancy. Instead of supporting De Levis, the host attempts to hush the matter up and when this fails, he sides with Dancy and subtly tries to destroy de Levis' reputation. When Dancy is later exposed, and commits suicide, de Levis is blamed for his demise.

At his country estate, Arthur Hilton (C. Aubrey Smith) is regaling his dinner guests of his exploits as a police officer decades earlier in Africa. He keys in a case where he had to track down a gang of three men who were suspected of a series of murders. He does stumble on them, but they actually end up capturing him. Fortunately, he was able to talk his way out of that predicament, and later on tracked them down again and captured them. One was hung for his crimes, while the other two were sentenced to twenty years in prison.
