Jeune homme idéaliste, Michael Sullivan décroche l'emploi de ses rêves : il devient coordinateur de l'opération Pétrole contre nourriture, un programme visant à satisfaire les besoins humanitaires du peuple irakien après la guerre du Golfe. Mais Sullivan découvre que derrière cette opération humanitaire se cache une conspiration au plus haut niveau. L'Irak attise la convoitise de bon nombre d'agents du gouvernement américain et de pays étrangers. Après avoir mené une enquête secrète, l'apprenti fonctionnaire comprend que ses soupçons étaient bien fondés et qu'une importante affaire de corruption est en train de prendre forme. One September morning in 1977 in Ankara, a young man rushes his pregnant wife to the hospital for the impending birth. He crashes into another car, whose driver is another father-to-be. As a result of the accident, the woman in the car they hit gives birth prematurely, resulting in both babies being born on the same day at the same hospital. That accident becomes the first of many coincidences that will connect the fates of Özgür and Deniz, whose lives will continue to intersect throughout the rest of their childhood and teenage years in Ankara. Each time their paths intersect, the cause of the intersection greatly transforms both Özgür and Deniz’s lives. However, their lives never fully intertwine because whatever it is that brings them together manages to build a wall between until their next encounter, some 25 years on, in Istanbul.

The story is set in Istanbul, during the Pogrom of September 1955. Behçet (Murat Yildirim) is the only son of a father, in whom the government and the bureaucracy take a close interest due to his strong influence in Antakya. While he is working as an assistant researcher in the faculty of law in Istanbul, he falls under the sway of the extreme nationalist movement as a result of his upbringing and the influential role model of his father. The only thing that causes Behçet to stumble on this is Elena, a woman he secretly observes from his apartment. She is a Greek prostitute, who has been exploited by her grandmother after her mother had left them. Elena is aware that she is being observed by Behçet and falls in love with him. They get close to each other which does not please Behçet's father and his political party. The death of his friend Suat and the role that his father plays with the leaders of the party to exterminate the opposition and even the tolerated voices force Behçet to reconsider his political belonging. Behçet finds Elena dead after being hit by the activist. He takes her and remembers the words she said while lying on the bed in her apartment.
