Après avoir joué dans Kom igen, nu'rå! de Lasse Hallström, Ingmar Bergman le choisit, en raison de l'expressivité de son regard, pour le rôle-titre d'Alexandre dans son Fanny et Alexandre, celui de Fanny étant tenu par Pernilla Allwin.
Guve obtient une maîtrise et un doctorat en génie industriel à l'Institut royal de technologie à Stockholm. Sa thèse porte sur la décision d'Industrifonden d'investir des fonds dans la société à haut risque Elekta. Le 1er janvier 2007, Guve est nommé directeur du Centre de technologie pour la médecine et la santé, une collaboration entre l'Institut Karolinska, le conseil du comté de Stockholm et l'Hôpital universitaire Karolinska.

Rational, exacting, and self-controlled theater director, Henrik Vogler, often stays after rehearsal to think and plan. On this day, Anna comes back, ostensibly looking for a bracelet. She is the lead in his new production of Strindberg's A Dream Play. She talks of her hatred for her mother (now dead), an alcoholic actress who was Vogler's star and lover. Vogler falls into a reverie, remembering a day Anna's mother, Rakel, late in life, came after rehearsal to beg him to come to her apartment. He awakes and Anna reveals the reason she has returned: she jolts him into an emotional response, rare for him, and the feelings of a young woman and an older man play out.

The story is set during 1907–09 (with an epilogue in 1910), in the Swedish town of Uppsala where Alexander (Bertil Guve), his sister Fanny (Pernilla Allwin) and their well-to-do family, the Ekdahls, live. The siblings' parents are both involved in theater and are happily married until their father, Oscar (Allan Edwall), suddenly dies from a stroke. Shortly thereafter, their mother, Emilie (Ewa Fröling), marries Edvard Vergérus (Jan Malmsjö), the local bishop and a widower, and moves into his ascetic home where he lives with his mother, sister, aunt and maids.
