The story follows the interactions of two boys who first became best friends during their years at an orphanage. Once they leave the orphanage to continue their separate ways as adults, they keep in touch with each other even though they disagree on almost all the major issues in life. The story tells of a six-year-old boy who would travel with his grandfather on an old horse-drawn cart through the alleyways in a Jewish ghetto of Montreal in the 1920s. The two would call out to residents asking to collect their old junk (a rag-and-bone man). The boy's grandfather was religious but his father was not. Director Jean-Claude Lord exploits the post-October Crisis paranoia that was rampant in Quebec with considerable panache with this skilful melodrama. Although the story is not about the events leading up to the War Measures Act, it does draw upon the fabric and feelings of that time. A young photographer (Réjean Guénette) becomes unwittingly entangled in a terrorist organization, which engages in a plot against prominent politicians and business leaders before an upcoming election. The film was hugely popular in Quebec and established Lord as a major director with this, his third feature.
