Birgitta Valberg (16 December 1916 – 29 March 2014) was a Swedish actress.

She trained at the Dramatens elevskola. Best known for her work in several Ingmar Bergman films made over a 30-year period, she appeared in the Bergman produced Paradise Place (1977). For her role in this film, directed by Gunnel Lindblom, another member of Bergman's repertory company, she won the award for Best Actress at the 13th Guldbagge Awards.

A policeman (Nyman) who is a patient at a hospital in Stockholm is brutally murdered, stabbed repeatedly with a bayonet. The investigation that follows is led by Martin Beck and Einar Rönn. It turns out that the murdered man had sadistic tendencies and was known among his colleagues for abusing his police privileges and brutalizing civilians. Although his colleagues had been aware of his behaviour, the police force's esprit de corps had suppressed complaints about him and prevented any reprisals.

The film takes place in Sweden around the turn of the twentieth century. Fredrik Egerman is a middle-aged lawyer married to a 19-year-old beauty, Anne. Karin Mansdotter is the daughter of an ordinary soldier. Still King Erik of Sweden falls madly in love with her. This turn of fate is appreciated by his adviser Göran Persson because he lives in constant fear the nobles could find a way to increase their influence on the king. When Erik's plan to marry English princess Elizabeth Tudor fails, Persson condones Erik's decision to make Karin his Queen. The Swedish nobility resents this wedding. The isolated King eventually shows signs of disstress which are used against him. In the end he is dethroned and replaced by his brother while Persson gets hanged for treason.
