John P. "Blackie" Whiteford (April 27, 1889 – March 21, 1962) was an American film actor. He appeared in 275 films between 1928 and 1962. A career character actor, Whiteford is best known for appearing in 28 films with The Three Stooges between 1936 and 1956.

He was born in New York, New York and died in Hollywood, California.

Senator Ransom "Ranse" Stoddard (James Stewart) and his wife Hallie (Vera Miles) arrive by train in the frontier town of Shinbone, in an unnamed western state, to attend the funeral of Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). As they make their way toward the undertaker's establishment to pay their respects to the deceased, a reporter (Joseph Hoover) and his editor, Maxwell Scott (Carleton Young) approach and ask Stoddard to explain why a United States Senator would make the long journey from Washington just to attend the funeral of a local rancher.

Shemp is suffering from an enlarged vein in his leg, and fears that it will lead to amputation. His doctor (Vernon Dent), however, advises that a few weeks in the Old West will cure him. Upon arrival in a somewhat lawless town, the boys befriend the ruthless Doc Barker (Norman Willes). Barker listens to Shemp's story about his bad leg, mistaking "the biggest vein you ever saw" for a gold-bearing vein worth millions. The Stooges take a liking to Barker, but are later informed by the beautiful Nell (Christine McIntyre) that he is an outlaw who is holding her two sisters (Norma Randall and Ruth White) hostage in the basement of the saloon.

The Stooges awake one morning to their mother's cry, "Now that I'm old your father has divorced me!" The letter states that their father (Shemp Howard, pulling double duty as both himself and his father) has just become rich via an oil well and is planning to leave their mother and marry a young gold digging blonde (Connie Cezon). The Stooges set off to try and stop the wedding. But since Shemp and his father look exactly alike, the broad ends up marrying the wrong man. In the finale of the short, the Stooges manage to escape the clutches of the criminals trying to kill them for their father's oil money, and rescue their father.

The Stooges are stage hands who also have small parts in the production of "The Bride Wore Spurs." They quickly get on the bad side of their producer, B. K. Doaks (Emil Sitka), who has had his last several plays panned by famous critic Nick Barker (Ned Glass) and wants to put on a good show with what he has. In order to prevent Barker from getting in to see the play, he commissions the boys to stop him from sneaking in, which they fail to do as a result of their confusing disguises (they end up attacking each other and B.K.).

The Stooges are the sole heirs to a grandiose inheritance, but the money is in the hands of an underhanded broker named Icabod Slipp (Kenneth MacDonald). They try to claim the inheritance at the office of Cess, Poole, and Drayne. Their attorney, played by Emil Sitka, explains that he doesn't have their money and they have to find Slipp. While in the office, the trio try to help find some files and tangle with a very stubborn filing cabinet. One by one the Stooges confront Slipp in his office. He in turn accuses first Larry, then Moe, then Shemp, of being that crook Slipp, and successfully flees his office with the money.

After escaping from the railroad police after stowing away on a train, the Stooges befriend a champion wrestler named Ivan Bustoff (Harrison Greene). His trainers, who are part of the mob, have a large bet placed on Bustoff to win the big match. But Bustoff likes to go out drinking, and after a wild night out with the boys ending in Bustoff downing "a little bit of tequila, vodka and cognac" and passing out drunk, the mobsters hire/force the Stooges to become Bustoff's managers and get him to the ring sober. In the locker room at the arena, the boys are trying to wake Bustoff up, but end up knocking him out with dumb bells and causing the locker to fall on him.
