Bohdan Sylvestrovych Stupka (Ukrainian: Богдан Ступка; August 27, 1941 – July 22, 2012) was a popular Ukrainian actor and the minister of culture of Ukraine. He was born in Kulików, General Government to Ukrainian parents. In 2001 he was a member of the jury at the 23rd Moscow International Film Festival. At the 26th Moscow International Film Festival he won the award for Best Actor for his role in Our Own.

Stupka was recognized as one of the most famous Ukrainian actors. He has played more than a hundred roles in films and over fifty in theaters. Stupka has been awarded the title Artist of Ukraine and People's Artist of the USSR. Hero of Ukraine (The Order of the State) (2011).

His son Ostap Stupka is also an actor.

L'histoire se déroule dans l'Ukraine du XVII siècle. Le vieux colonel ouman Taras Boulba accueille ses deux fils, Ostap et Andreï, rentrés après deux ans d'études au séminaire de Kiev. Il les accompagne vers la Sitch Zaporogue afin de les initier à l'art militaire. Alors qu'ils se trouvent dans le camp, une mauvaise nouvelle leur parvient. Il s'avère que les Polonais ont attaqué le khoutor de Boulba et que sa femme a été tuée. Tarass se joint alors aux cosaques qui affrontent les troupes polonaises. Ils assiègent la ville de Doubno jusqu'à ce que ses habitants commencent à manquer de vivres. Mais le vieux colonel ignore que son cadet, Andreï, est amoureux de la jeune fille du voïvode Mazowiecki, Elżbieta, rencontrée à Kiev, qui se meurt de faim de l'autre côté de la muraille. Une nuit, la servante de Elżbieta amène le jeune homme par le passage souterrain jusqu'à sa maitresse qu'il décide ne plus jamais quitter. Le lendemain, Tarass voit apparaître son fils à la tête de la cavalerie de contre-offensive. Il ordonne alors à ses hommes d'attirer Andreï dans les bois où il le tue après l'avoir renié. Pendant ce temps, son ainé, Ostap, est capturé par l'ennemi et transporté à Varsovie. Aidé de Yankel, le marchand juif jadis sauvé lors d'un pogrome, Tarass vole au secours de son fils, mais arrive juste au moment quand ce dernier se fait exécuter après une séance de torture sur la place publique. Taras fait payer cher la mort d'Ostap, bravant la mort, mais au bout d'un moment son unité est repérée et encerclée. Comprenant que l'ennemi est surtout après lui, il permet à ses compagnons de s'échapper, se laisse faire prisonnier et sera brûlé vif sur le bûcher. Elżbieta donne naissance à un garçon. Elle meurt en couches. Son père, le voïvode Mazowiecki, fou de douleur, prend un sabre et le brandit au-dessus de l'enfant, mais ne parvient pas à tuer un être sans défense qui est en plus son petit-fils.

The film starts with Nevsky's wedding which involves an attempt of poisoning by his former friend Ratmir. Yashka, a jester at the wedding tried to warn him but was dragged away and was put under a table by the Nevsky's guards. Desperate to serve his leader as a savior, not only as a fool, Yashka comes out of the table and drinks from Nevsky's cup in which suspected poison was placed. After the attempt, Ratmir escapes the ceremony and gallops away on a horse. After the ceremony, Alexander orders to find him, because he suspects that Ratmir was plotting it from the orders of the Swedes who were approaching Novgorod at that time. Meantime, the Boyars and Mongols are sieging the city as well. Alexander then goes underground where he finds Boyars and kill their leader.

The film is set during the Khrushchev Thaw in Soviet Crimea, Ukraine, and concentrates on a young cadet in the Red Army named Viktor (Igor Petrenko), who becomes a chauffeur for a general (Bohdan Stupka) and begins a relationship with the general's disabled and volatile daughter, Vera (Alena Babenko). It is October 1941. Soviet Russia has been attacked and invaded by the Germans. The country has begun total mobilization and fighting back. The Great Patriotic War had begun. The Germans occupy large parts of Soviet Russia, including the Pskov Region where some of the province is still free. In this province, a NKVD officer (Sergey Garmash) arrives on his motorcycle. He stops at the officer's building and on the highest floor and speaks to a NKVD-Officer who seems to be a major. He hands him the personal documents of a fallen Red Army soldier. The main NKVD officer known as the "Checkist" eats porridge and drinks milk. Suddenly a German grenade explodes. German special assault troops enter the building and attack the NKVD staff and soldiers. "Checkist" and his NKVD comrade, a political instructor called "Livshits" (Konstantin Khabensky) flee, amid the chaos and gunfire they change clothes in a local laundry, knowing that German troops shoot Red Army commanders, officers and political commissars. Eventually they are caught by soldiers from a German motorized unit who invaded the province and taken many prisoners. (Both Red Armists and local civilians). The prisoners are led westward to the local dislocation point of the German army.
