Bien qu'il ait écrit des films de tous genres, il est célèbre surtout pour ses westerns. Ses plus célèbres sont trois des collaborations entre Anthony Mann et James Stewart : Winchester '73 (1950), Les Affameurs (1952) et Je suis un aventurier (1954). Il fut aussi auteur du succès d'Howard Hawks : La Rivière rouge (1948).
Avant de devenir romancier, puis scénariste à Hollywood, Borden Chase a fait tous les métiers. Boxeur, conducteur de taxi, et même chauffeur d'un chef de gang, jusqu'à ouvrier dans la construction d'un tunnel. Ce dernier travail lui inspira un de ses romans Under Pressure, que Raoul Walsh adapta au cinéma dès 1935.
Pour Jean-Pierre Coursodon et Bertrand Tavernier, il fut « l'un des princes du western. [...] Grand connaisseur de l'histoire de l'Ouest, il s'attaqua la plupart du temps à des sujets dont le contenu social et historique échappa aux critiques européens: la création de la première piste qui permit de faire voyager le bétail, l'apparition de la première carabine à répétition, la fin des grands espaces, les premiers barbelés, les mercenaires américains au Mexique, les Russes en Alaska, tous ses points de départ sont pittoresques mais aussi d'une importance historique capitale. »
Il faut ajouter que l'écriture de Borden Chase était très subtile, notamment dans Vera Cruz où le spectateur n'a pas toujours les éléments pour percevoir le jeu auquel se livrent les personnages, et surtout dans Coup de fouet en retour où le scénariste introduit des éléments freudiens dans le western. Il donna également des sujets à Raoul Walsh qui permirent au cinéaste de réaliser deux de ses meilleurs films des années cinquante (Le monde lui appartient et La Belle Espionne).

Naive Montana cowboy Duke Fergus (John Wayne) arrives in San Francisco and visits the notorious Barbary Coast. Joe Daylight is on the run along with members of his outlaw gang, The Kid, Doc and Henri. After fleeing from a bank robbery, they manage to elude the posse chasing them after crossing into Mexico. The gang had agreed to meet up later to divide up the money, however Daylight instead tells them that he has used the money to buy a hacienda, the Casa Grande. Although several of them protest, the gang agrees to follow Daylight to the ranch. He also enlists a mystical Mexican gunfighter called ”Viajero” (Traveller) – who knows the neighbourhood and comes from a haciendero family (though few know this) – to help him fit into the role of a Mexican hacienda owner, a hidalgo.

In 1896, Jeff Webster (James Stewart) hears of the Klondike gold rush and he and friend Ben Tatum (Walter Brennan) decide to drive a herd of cattle to Dawson City. On the way, he annoys self-appointed Skagway judge Gannon (John McIntire) by interrupting a hanging, so the "lawman" confiscates his herd. Jeff and Ben steal the animals back and take off with Gannon and his men in hot pursuit. After crossing the border into Canada, Jeff uses a few well-placed warning shots to persuade Gannon's gang to give up the chase, but the judge promises a hot reception when Jeff returns.

Captain David O'Keefe (Burt Lancaster), seeking his fortune in the 19th century South Pacific, decides to enlist island natives to harvest copra, but runs into a wall of cultural problems. The year is 1800, and Britain and France have been at war since 1798, in what later was to be known as the War of the Second Coalition. Gilliatt, a fisherman-turned-smuggler on Guernsey, agrees to transport a beautiful woman, Drouchette, to the French coast. She tells him she hopes to rescue her brother from a French prison. Gilliatt finds himself falling in love and so feels betrayed when he later learns that Drouchette is a countess helping Napoleon plan an invasion of Britain. In reality, however, Drouchette is a British agent working to thwart this invasion. When Gilliatt learns this, he returns to France to rescue her, just as her true purpose has been discovered by the French.
