The title character, a widow whose savings have been depleted by her selfish, middle-aged children, Lulu and Ad, finds herself homeless when the bank forecloses on her mortgage. She becomes friendly with Bill Green, an aging itinerant salvaging the house's plumbing, who she soon discovers is really fugitive bank robber William Gruenwald. Hoping to recoup her losses from the bank that took her home, Bunny blackmails Bill into teaching her how to rob the institution in exchange for keeping his identity a secret. She wears a long blonde wig, over-sized hat, and sunglasses, while he dons a fake beard, leather vest, and bell-bottom pants, and the two pull off the caper and escape on a 250cc Triumph TRW Trophy motorcycle. Buoyed by their success, Bunny convinces Bill to join her in more heists, and the different modus operandi they use - setting free a canary to distract the guard, setting off smoke bombs - make it difficult for police lieutenant Horace Greeley and criminologist R.J. Hart to profile their suspects.

The Angels first take note of "Poet" (Jack Nicholson) after one of them inadvertently damages his motorcycle and breaks its headlight. Poet, with far more guts than brains, challenges the Angel that hit his motorcycle. This is an act that would traditionally result in every Angel present participating in a group beating of the attacker. "When a non-Angel hits an Angel, all Angels retaliate." But the leader of the Angels, Buddy (Adam Roarke), intervenes and tells Poet that the Angels will replace the headlight. In the meantime, he's welcome to ride with them while they take care of business—which turns out to be going to a bar and beating up the members of another club who previously beat an Angel.

The baby's name is Pauline, and the boy (whose name is later revealed to be George) promises to protect her no matter what. Soon, it is time for Pauline to get adopted. George tries numerous attempts to prevent that from happening as she gets older. His last stunt however makes Pauline suitable for her new parents. Mrs. Carruthers, the owner of the foundling home (played by Doris Packer), and George (now played by Pat Boone) transport Pauline to her new home. Her new parents tell their son to get Pauline's bags. At the same time, Pauline remembers her toothbrush and goes back to the car to retrieve it. George seizes the opportunity to prevent Pauline from living with her new family, and pulls the hand brake on the car. It races away, and everyone begins to chase after it. The opening credits are displayed as the car careens down the street and into a poultry farm. All seems well until the car reaches a train crossing. Pauline and her brother to be aren't hurt, but her parents to be do not want her anymore. Mrs. Carruthers finds out that George pulled the hand brake, and sends him packing.
