Carl Harbaugh (November 10, 1886 – February 26, 1960) was an American film actor, screenwriter and director. He appeared in 59 films between 1912 and 1957. He wrote for a further 46 films and directed 25.

He was born in Washington, D.C., and died in Hollywood, California.

Amantha Starr (Yvonne De Carlo) is raised as the privileged white daughter of a Kentucky plantation owner. However, after he dies, a shocking secret is revealed: unbeknownst to Amantha, her mother had been one of her father's black slaves. Legally now property, she is taken by a slave trader to New Orleans to be sold. On the riverboat ride there, he makes it clear that he intends to sleep with her, but desists when she tries to hang herself; as a beautiful, cultured young woman who can pass for white, she is far too valuable to risk losing.

Ben Allison (Clark Gable) and his brother Clint (Cameron Mitchell) journey to Montana in search of gold. They were on their way home after four years of absence serving the Confederate Army where Ben Allison was a Colonel and they were broke. They come upon wealthy businessman Nathan Stark (Robert Ryan) who they rob and kidnap before he talks them into becoming partners with him on a cattle drive to Montana. As they travel to Texas to buy the cattle, their pack mule loaded with supplies and food fell in a snowy river. They come upon a party of settlers with Nella Turner (Jane Russell) serving as the spokesperson who share their fire and agree to slaughter a mule for food; as they leave the next day they realize the Indians (Sioux) are likely to attack the settlers. Ben believed that unless someone would help, the settlers including Nella would be massacred. Ben told brother Clint and Stark to go on to San Antonio to buy the cattle and he will just join them there. Ben heads back to the settlers camp just in time to see the last of the settlers being attacked by a war party and shoots several of them. He saves Nella Turner (Jane Russell) Ben and Nella have a fling while stuck in a cabin during a snow storm. The love between Nella and Ben abruptly joined the harsh cold winter environment as Nella vehemently disagreed with Ben's plan once they get married. Nella rejects him as he "dreams too small" for just wanting to settle down to a ranch in his hometown of Prairie Dog Creek and she sees Ben's lifestyle as the road to unhappiness given her parents' experience.

The film is a drama set in World War II, following a group of United States Marines from boot camp to combat (6th Marines, 2d Marine Division). It depicts the forming of comradeships and the relentless training which the battalion, led by Major "High Pockets" Huxley, has to undergo. In two battles (Guadalcanal and Tarawa), the battalion is used only for mop-up duties, but after an out-of-line argument between "High Pockets" and the commanding general, they are used as lead battalion in the battle for Saipan, suffering heavy casualties as they land on the exposed left flank of Red Beach. Huxley is killed and as they watch his body being carried off the field his grim-faced men fix bayonets ready to meet a Japanese counter-attack.

In 1896, Jeff Webster (James Stewart) hears of the Klondike gold rush and he and friend Ben Tatum (Walter Brennan) decide to drive a herd of cattle to Dawson City. On the way, he annoys self-appointed Skagway judge Gannon (John McIntire) by interrupting a hanging, so the "lawman" confiscates his herd. Jeff and Ben steal the animals back and take off with Gannon and his men in hot pursuit. After crossing the border into Canada, Jeff uses a few well-placed warning shots to persuade Gannon's gang to give up the chase, but the judge promises a hot reception when Jeff returns.

Quelques années après la guerre de Sécession, en Arizona, Jennifer Ballard voyage de la Géorgie à la Californie à bord d'une diligence dans le but de retrouver son fiancé Ben Warren. La voiture est escortée par des soldats car elle transporte aussi la solde. Ils s'arrêtent pour la nuit dans une petite ville, l'escorte se rendant au fort voisin pour être remplacée. Ben, impatient de retrouver sa fiancée, est déjà là. Slayton, attiré par Jennifer, est ennuyé par l'arrivée de Ben, mais les invite néanmoins à dîner. Lorsque la conversation vient à porter sur la guerre, Ben, lui aussi un ancien Confédéré, déclare préférer désormais les compromis et la paix. Le lendemain matin, la diligence repart, mais les soldats qui l'escortent sont en fait des hommes de Slayton. En plein milieu du désert, ils arrêtent la voiture et tuent le conducteur. Slayton dévoile alors sa véritable identité et, lorsque Ben tente de s'interposer, lui tire dessus, le laissant pour mort. Les hors-la-loi partent alors avec l'argent et emmènent Jennifer avec eux. Plus tard, après que Jess a mis en doute la nécessité d'emmener Jennifer, Slayton le fait ligoter et le laisse en plein soleil avant de partir. Pendant ce temps, Ben a repris ses esprits et, après avoir retrouvé un des chevaux de l'attelage, suit la piste des bandits jusqu'à leur cachette, où il trouve Jess, inconscient. Marsha Mitchell (Ginger Rogers), a traveling dress model, stops in the Southern town of Rockpoint to see her newlywed sister, Lucy Rice (Doris Day). Within minutes of entering the town she notices unusual behavior by the townsfolk, such as dozens of people closing up shop and getting out of sight. As she walks down the almost-pitch-black main street, she sees loud noises coming from the police station. She hides but sees a drunken KKK mob, beating and berating a man whom they had just broken out of jail. The man untangles himself from their clutches, and he starts to run but goes only a few yards before someone in the mob twice fires a shotgun, killing him by striking him in the torso and the head. The mob, confused, approaches the fallen man, arguing among themselves. Marsha, hiding around a corner from the crime scene, gets a good look at two of the men, who have removed their hoods during the fiasco.
