In New York City, during a séance held in the apartment of medium Theresa, Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl) experiences a traumatic vision of a priest, Father Thomas (Fabrizio Jovine), hanging himself from a tree branch in a cemetery of the remote village of Dunwich. When the images overwhelm her, Mary breaks the circle, goes into convulsions, and falls to the floor as if dead. The police, led by Sergeant Clay, interrogate Theresa, but fail to heed her warnings of an imminent evil. Outside the apartment building, Peter Bell (Christopher George), a local journalist, tries to gain entry to the premises but is turned away. The following day, Mary is buried in a local cemetery on Long Island overlooking Manhattan and Peter visits her grave site. The gravediggers (Perry Pirkanen and Michael Gaunt) leave Mary's half-covered coffin at the end of their work shift and leave. As Peter begins to leave, he hears muffled screams. Using a pickaxe, he frees Mary from her premature burial, the pickaxe coming dangerously close to her head as it smashes through the casket lid.

A large ship drifts into New York Harbor, seemingly abandoned. The ship is discovered to be carrying large containers of coffee, hidden inside of which are a series of football-sized green eggs. The crew sent in to explore the ghost ship find the mutilated remains of the former crew gathered in one place, and they soon discover the reason why: when disturbed, the green eggs explode, spraying a viscous liquid over everything. The liquid is toxic to living creatures, and causes the body to immediately explode.

When the existence of a strain of plague (vaguely identified as pneumonic) is revealed at the U.S. mission at the International Health Organization, three terrorists seek to blow up the U.S. mission. Two of them are shot, one mortally, by security personnel but one escapes. The surviving terrorist is hospitalized and quarantined and identified as Swedish. Dr. Elena Stradner (Ingrid Thulin) and U.S. Colonel Stephen Mackenzie (Burt Lancaster) (Military Intelligence assigned to the IHO) argue over the nature of the strain, which Stradner suspects is a biological weapon but which Colonel Mackenzie claims was in the process of being destroyed.

A Montréal, Floyd et Joe, deux malfrats venus des Etats-Unis, commettent ensemble un hold-up dans une bijouterie. Après le cambriolage, ils ne parviennent qu'à échapper difficilement à la police. Décidant de se séparer pour compliquer la traque, Floyd et Joe se donnent rendez-vous près de la frontière, aux Etats-Unis. C'est Floyd, ancien cascadeur, qui conserve le butin et part en voiture. En route, il est victime d'un accident sans gravité mais qui le contraint à passer quelque temps dans un motel en attendant que le véhicule soit réparé. Il est accueilli avec beaucoup d'égards par les gérants, Fred et Michele Nolton.
