Carolyn Farina is an American actress best known for roles in the Whit Stillman films Metropolitan and The Last Days of Disco. She plays the same character (Audrey Rouget) in both films. She also appears in The Age of Innocence, which was directed by Martin Scorsese, and Little Noises, which was directed by Jane Spencer. Most recently, she appeared in Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress, playing a waitress in a diner.

Newly transferred college student Lily becomes friends with Violet, Heather and Rose, a clique who run the campus' suicide prevention centre. In the early 80s Alice Kinnon (Chloë Sevigny) and Charlotte Pingress (Kate Beckinsale), two young Hampshire College graduates. work in a New York publishing house as poorly paid readers. After work they are able to enter an exclusive disco nightclub where Alice is hoping to meet Jimmy Steinway (Mackenzie Astin), who works in advertising and uses the nightclub to entertain clients. Jimmy is ill-tempered because he has been barred from bringing clients to the nightclub and is eventually kicked out by his friend Des McGrath (Chris Eigeman), who works as a manager at the club but whose job is in jeopardy for allowing Jimmy and his clients inside.

Joey (Crispin Glover) is an awkward young man who is unsuccessful in his career as a writer. In order to impress his girlfriend Stella (Tatum O'Neal), Joey steals the poetry of Marty (Matthew Hutton) a deaf-mute poet. Not only does Joey succeed, but he also manages to sign with literary agent Mathias (Rik Mayall). While Joey is successful, it comes as the cost of Marty's own happiness and the man quickly falls into a deep depression and becomes homeless. Fame quickly goes to Joey's head and as he feels little guilt over the theft or loyalty to his friends and girlfriend, he breaks off communication with all of them.
