Biography
César Charlone a grandi en Uruguay, et fait ses études au Brésil à l'école de cinéma de São Paulo. Il vit depuis au Brésil et travaille principalement dans ce pays. En 1975, il commence comme chef opérateur sur des documentaires et de longs métrages. Il sera remarqué comme directeur de la photographie sur le film La Cité de Dieu de Fernando Meirelles, pour lequel il sera nommé aux Oscars 2004. Il continue depuis sa collaboration avec le réalisateur brésilien.En 2007, il devient réalisateur aux côtés d'Enrique Fernández dans leur film Les Toilettes du Pape présenté lors du Festival de Cannes 2007 dans la section Un certain regard.

In 2003, burnt-out ex-CIA officer and former U.S. Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance officer John Creasy (Denzel Washington) looks for work and reunites with old friend and comrade Paul Rayburn (Christopher Walken), who runs a security firm in Mexico. Because of the extremely high rate of kidnappings in Mexico City for ransom money, businessman Samuel Ramos (Marc Anthony) hires Creasy through Rayburn to guard his nine-year-old daughter "Pita" (Dakota Fanning), intending to keep him on for only a short period in order to renew his kidnap and ransom insurance on Pita. Creasy suffers from alcoholism, depression and severe guilt as a result of his past work as a counterinsurgency fighter and assassin, and so works for Samuel at a rate far below what his experience would command. At first Creasy distances himself socially from Pita, but the two soon develop a friendship, which allows Creasy to overcome his demons and to act as a mentor and surrogate father-figure to the girl.

In the opening scene, chickens are being prepared for a meal when a chicken escapes and an armed gang chases after it in a favela called the Cidade de Deus ("City of God"). The chicken stops between the gang and a young man named Rocket (Buscapé), who believes that the gang wants to kill him. A flashback traces Rocket, the narrator, back to the late 1960s. The dullard Maguila accidentally kills the drug lord of Favela Santa Marta, Rio de Janeiro. Pursued by other drug dealers, Maguila flees from the favela along with a 13-year-old tomboy nicknamed Branquinha who proclaims herself Maguila's wife. Amid the confusion, Branquinha takes her friend Japa into a car whose driver is obligated to help Maguila. Suddenly, Maguila get out of the car with the children. They arrive in the house of the American William, and Maguila asks to use to pee in his bathroom, as according to Branquinha he was well-bred by his mother. Assuming it is a robbery, William's chauffeur shoots Maguila who in response kills him.
