Charles Bennett (11 March 1889 – 15 February 1943) was a New Zealand-born American actor, who was mostly successful in silent films.
Bennett was born in Dunedin, New Zealand and died in Hollywood, California. He started his film career in Keystone comedies like Tillie's Punctured Romance and The Property Man. He also appeared in the Broadway musical Of Thee I Sing between 1931 and 1933. The sound film damaged his career and he got reduced to bit parts during his later film appareances. However, he was notable as the entertainer in the Inquirer party sequence in Citizen Kane (1941). He appeared in over hundred films between 1912 until his death in 1943. Bennett was married with actress Boots Mallory (1913–1958).

Wilbur Hoolihan (Lou Costello) accidentally kills a hack horse owned by King O'Hara (Cecil Kellaway) and his daughter, Princess (Patsy O'Connor) by feeding it candy. In hopes of raising enough money to replace it, he and his friend Grover Mockridge (Bud Abbott) visit a gambling parlor. They are successful in raising the money, but before they can purchase a new horse, a con man swindles Wilbur out of his cash. They are informed by some touts that an old horse is available for nothing at one of the tracks. They visit the track and mistakenly take the wrong horse, a champion by the name of Tea Biscuit. They present the horse to O'Hara as a replacement for his deceased horse.

"John Smith" (Ronald Colman) is a British officer who was gassed and became shell shocked in the trenches during the First World War. In 1940, American-built North American Harvard training aircraft are flown to just outside Canada, where they are towed across the border for use by Britain. (The procedure is necessary to avoid violating the Neutrality Acts, as the United States is still neutral.) Cocky American pilot Tim Baker (Tyrone Power) decides to fly across the border to Trenton, Ontario, and winds up in trouble with the military authorities, unconvincingly claiming he was looking for Trenton, New Jersey. Baker ferries a Lockheed Hudson bomber to Britain, pocketing $1,000 for his work.

On the Northwest Frontier of India, circa 1880, contact has been lost with a British outpost at Tantrapur in the midst of a telegraph message. Colonel Weed (Montagu Love) dispatches a detachment of 25 British Indian Army troops to investigate, led by three sergeants of the Royal Engineers, MacChesney (Victor McLaglen), Cutter (Cary Grant), and Ballantine (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.), long-time friends and veteran campaigners. Although they are a disciplinary headache for their colonel, they are the right men to send on a dangerous mission. Young Jim Hawkins (Cooper) and his mother run the Admiral Benbow, a tavern near Bristol, England.
